Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
BOSSIER CITY, LA - Ken Carroll made 33 saves to earn his 200th career victory as the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs defeated the Corpus Christi IceRays 4-1 Sunday afternoon at the CenturyTel Center. The win improved the Mudbugs to 3-1 against Corpus Christi this year and 26-17-4 overall.
Four different Mudbugs found the back of the net in the game, with Tyrel Lucas (two assists) finishing as the only 'Bug with multiple points. David Rutherford's first period goal extended his CHL-best point streak to 13 games and Simon Mangos stayed hot with another assist in the game as well.
The Mudbugs got going offensively early in this one when Rutherford scored at 1:08 to extend his goal-scoring streak to four games, in addition to a 13-game point streak. Shawn Limpright built on the lead at 5:28, stealing a puck in the IceRays' zone and powering to the front before beating Kris Tebbs from in tight to give the 'Bugs a 2-0 lead after one period, despite a 15-7 shot advantage for Corpus Christi.
Bossier-Shreveport fought off three IceRays powerplays in the second period to maintain the two-goal lead until Jeff Kyrzakos made it 3-0, roofing a shot over Kris Tebbs' shoulder off a nice feed from Mark Johnson at 16:03. Corpus Christi got on the board three minutes later as Ryan Garbutt beat Ken Carroll high to the stick side off the rush to cut the advantage to 3-1.
Then with less than a minute remaining in the period, Tyrel Lucas fed Justin Aikins during a 2-on-1 break just before Aikins cut to his backhand and scored past a sprawled out Tebbs to regain the three-goal edge for the Mudbugs at 4-1.
Both teams fired nine shots on net and had two powerplays in the third period, but the score didn't change as Bossier-Shreveport won its 12th home game of the season and Joe Blaznek played his 700th career game.
Ken Carroll improved to 10-6-3 with the victory in his first start since January 23. Kris Tebbs made 18 saves, including a few impressive ones in the loss. Neither team scored on the powerplay in the contest, with the 'Bugs missing on six chances and the Rays going 0 for 7. Corpus Christi outshot Bossier-Shreveport 34-22.
The Mudbugs will continue a three-game homestand Friday and Saturday night with "Pink in the Rink" weekend as they play host to Tulsa on Friday and Wichita on Saturday. Both games will be devoted to raising money and increasing awareness for the fight against breast cancer right here in our community.
