Arizona Sundogs News Release
PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - Skating in their second consecutive shootout, Doug Groenestege and the Arizona Sundogs extended their season-long road win streak to five games topping the Amarillo Gorillas by a 5-4 mark Sunday afternoon at the Amarillo Civic Center in Amarillo, Texas.
Earning his third straight win, Groenestege improves to 7-0 in shootouts this season after turning aside three of four skaters in the shootout and 27 of 31 shots through 65 minutes of play.
Linus Fagemo picked up two goals in the win and was credited with the game-winner after lifting a backhand effort over Mike Brown in the second round of the shootout. Kyle Hood and Jason Visser also converted in the shootout for Arizona.
The Sundogs, playing in their tenth-straight one-goal game, tallied a season-high four power-play goals in the win.
Arizona closed-out its three-game road trip earning six points in the standings to pull within eight points of the Corpus Christi IceRays and the Southern Conference's fifth and final playoff spot.
Steve Potvin, Nick Biondo, Fagemo and Hood each collected multiple-point outings in the win while Belanger netted his eighth goal in his last 10 games 23 seconds into the second period after having an 11-game point streak snapped Saturday night.
Amarillo opened scoring 4:37 into the contest with their first of two power-play tallies as David Nimmo connected on a rebound chance just outside the crease after an Erik Felde shot.
Potvin evened the score at one midway through the first while on one of nine Arizona man-advantage chances, striding across the top of the zone and firing a slap shot through traffic past Brown at the 10:55 mark.
The Sundogs and Gorillas combined for six goals in a back-and-forth middle frame that saw the two teams trade three separate one-goal leads.
An even-strength maker by Austin Sutter at 5:44 of the second knotted the score at two after Jason Chafe cut across the offensive zone from the near boards before throwing a pass back across the play to Sutter in the near circle.
Jake Morissette redirected a Shaun Arvai shot past Groenestege at the 9:14 mark to give Amarillo a 3-2 lead before Fagemo caught the Gorillas on a line change three minutes later, collecting a long feed from Hood and skating in alone on Brown to tie the game at three.
Dumping the puck in from just across center ice with 5:10 to play, Hood gathered his 12th of the year, capitalizing on a misplay by Brown as the goaltender had the puck roll off his stick behind the net.
An Anthony Battaglia power-play marker with 3:01 to play in the middle frame forced overtime and the eventual shootout.
With the win Arizona (18-26-5) improves to 13-10-3 away from Tim's Toyota Center this season. The Sundogs return to Prescott Valley for three straight beginning Tuesday at 7:05pm against the league-leading Odessa Jackalopes.
