Rapid City Rush News Release
(Rapid City, SD) - The Rapid City Rush were dealt their first loss of the season on Friday night at the hands of the Arizona Sundogs who scored their first victory of the 2009-10 campaign. The Sundogs were powered by 3 goals in a franchise-best 56 seconds in the second period.
The opening frame started exactly how the Rush wanted it with a goal in the opening minute of play. Jim Henkemeyer took a pass from Rich Hansen and fired a shot to the net that was redirected by Jon Pelle for the game's first goal just 53 seconds in. The Rush led 1-0 heading into the first intermission while the Sundogs held an edge in shots 11-7.
The second period started the same way with Les Reaney netting the early tally to double the Rush lead. Reaney was able to split the Sundog defense and slide a shot five-hole on Arizona netminder JF Perras just 48 seconds into the middle frame. The game would remain 2-0 until 15:29 when the floodgates would open on the Rush as the Sundogs exploded for four unanswered goals. Starting the scoring was Torren Delforte who received a centering pass from Kyle Hood to cut the lead in half. Just 28 seconds later, the Sundogs would tie it with a goal from Steve Potvin with the assists going to Scott Thauwald and Rob Lehtinen. Another 28 seconds later Jason Visser would score his first of two to give the Sundogs their first lead of the game. After that goal, Rush netminder Miguel Beaudry was pulled and in came Danny Battochio for his first professional action. The debut did not go as Battochio wanted as just one minute and 37 seconds later, the Sundogs doubled their lead with another Visser goal assisted by Konrad Reeder. The second period flurry left Arizona up 4-2 heading into the final period.
In the third, Reaney would add his second of the game at the 3:33 mark to cut the lead in half. Then at the 11:19 mark, Brendan Cook would score the first shorthanded goal of the season for the Rush to tie the game. The goal came off of a faceoff and Blaine Jarvis picked up the lone assist. Before long, John Landry would score the eventual game-winner with under 5 minutes left in regulation. At the end of the game, the Sundogs picked up their first win of the season while dealing the Rush their first loss, 5-4.
In all, the Sundogs poured in 49 shots on the Rapid City goal while the Rush sent in 33. Neither team could find the back of the net on the man-advantage with Arizona finishing 0-for-7 and the Rush 0-for-6.
The two teams faceoff again tomorrow night at 7:05pm at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. Tickets for that game are still available.
