Amarillo Gorillas News Release
Amarillo, TX - The Gorillas denied the expansion Missouri Mavericks their first win in the franchise's history Saturday night, winning a one-goal game 3-2.
The first period had the makings of a high-scoring affair, but goaltenders Tuomas Lohtander and former Gorilla Mike Gorman stood tall, making a combine 16 saves on 16 shots (both teams also combined to go 0 for 4 on the power-play). Amarillo 0 Missouri 0 after one.
Both team's offenses broke out in the middle frame as the Gorillas netted the period's first three goals. CHL Player of the Week Joe Guenther would find the twine twice (once on the power-play), while forward Anthony Battaglia registered Amarillo's third goal (his fourth on the season). Missouri came charging back at the 10:10 mark, earning two unanswered goals on forward Ted Vandermeer's penalty shot marker and defenseman Andrew Davis' first goal of the season. At the end of two, Amarillo 3 Missouri 2.
The Gorillas would halt the Mavericks comeback with help from a terrific defense unit and goaltender Tuomas Lohtander who stopped all 11 Maverick shot attempts.
