NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, Texas - Fireworks and the unveiling of the championship banner was not enough to get Texas in winning form as they fell to the hands of the RiverKings 5-3 in their home opener.
Penalties doomed Texas early in the opening frame as Jason Deitsch, Craig Minard and Jordan Cameron were seated in the sin bin overlapping one another giving Mississippi a couple 5-on-3 powerplays in which they were able to convert into goals. Both goals were scored by Ryan Held for his fourth and fifth of the season.
Not to upset the home crowd at the NYTEX Sports Centre Brahmas defenseman Kevin McLeod swept the puck across Ray Jean's crease and fired the puck past the netminder for Texas' first tally of the game. Forwards A.J. Gale and Lee Jubinville were credited with the assists. With four minutes remaining in the period linemates Grant Jacobsen and Jordan Cameron did a little give and go across the sheet when Jacobsen's fake pass to Cameron caught Jean off giving Jacobsen his team leading fourth goal of the season and the 2-2 tie.
It was much the same in the second as âKings forward Ryan Campbell scored with the two man advantage as defensemen Denis Chisolm and Justin Kinnunen were penalized :45 seconds apart. Texas went into the second intermission trailing 3-2.
The game seemed to get away from the Brahmas in the third as frustrations built and tempers flared. After allowing another Mississippi goal, goaltender Brett Jaeger physically took things into his own hands leading to a game misconduct and allowing rookie Joe Palmer into the game. Fighting back in efforts to close the gap McLeod took a feed from Gale and Jubinville once again for his second goal of the night. But it just wasn't in the cards for the Brahmas to earn the victory in the home opener as they lost 5-3 after giving up a empty net goal in the winding seconds.
The Brahmas next home game is set for next Saturday, Halloween night against the Allen Americans at 7:05 PM. Fans are encouraged to dress up in their best Halloween costume for all the festivities. For tickets please call the Brahmas Box Office at (817) 336-4423 or log on to: www.brahmas.com.
