Milestone Night for Thinel, Despite Shootout Loss

(Odessa, TX) - Simon Mangos netted the 11th round shootout winner for the Mudbugs to defeat the Jackalopes, 5-4 at the Ector County Coliseum on Saturday night. Despite the loss, Sebastien Thinel also recorded the 300th assist and 500th point of his pro career.

It was a physical first period between the two teams, but Odessa managed to create some offense as Mike Lesperance netted the first goal of the game at 2:57. Collin Circelli and Sebastien Thinel added the assists. Circelli then found the back of the net at 4:26 to make it a 2-0 lead for Odessa on assists from Jeff Pierce and Derek May. It was May's first point of his pro career. The third goal of the period was tapped home by Jean Bourbeau on assists from Thinel and Mike Ramsay. Thinel picked up the 300th assist and 500th point of his pro career on the Bourbeau goal. After the first, it was a 3-0 lead for the Jackalopes.

The Mudbugs pulled to within one after a pair of goals in the second period. Mike Salekin scored the first goal at 6:59 and Travis Clayton tapped home the second goal at 10:39 on the power play to make the score 3-2. Kenny Bernard stuffed home a loose puck on the right post to regain the two-goal lead for Odessa at 4-2. Circelli and May had the assists. After two periods it was 4-2, Odessa.

Joe Blaznek and Brett Smith netted two goals for the Mudbugs with less than seven minutes remaining in regulation to force overtime.

Neither team scored in overtime forcing a shootout with took 11 rounds to decide. Simon Mangos scored both goals for the Bugs, including the 11th round winner. Mike Ramsay scored Odessa's only goal. Bossier took the win, 5-4.

The Jackalopes return to the ice on Tuesday when they host the Missouri Mavericks at the Ector County Coliseum. Game time is 7:05 PM. Former Jacks defenseman, Scott Hillman, makes his return to the Permian Basin as head coach of the Mavs.

The Odessa Jackalopes are the Central Hockey League affiliate for the NHL's New York Islanders and the AHL's Bridgeport Sound Tigers.
