Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
After racking up 68 hits in the first four games of the homestand, the Albuquerque Isotopes (5-4) offense was finally silenced as the Omaha Royals held the âTopes to just one unearned run on six hits en route to an 8-1 win on a rainy Friday night at Isotopes Park.
The Royals jumped out to a quick lead in the top of the first when Alex Gordon, who had just joined Omaha on a Major League rehabilitation assignment, crushed a two-out solo home run to give the visitors an immediate 1-0 edge.
Albuquerque answered immediately, however, in the bottom of the frame in a one-out rally that was ignited by Nick Green, who roped a double before scampering to third on a single by Xavier Paul. With runners on the corners, John Lindsey hit a grounder to first baseman Kila Ka'aihue, who stepped on the bag as Green broke for the plate. Ka'aihue's throw home sailed errantly out of the grasp of catcher Cody Clark, allowing Green to score easily and tie the contest at 1-1.
That turned out to be the extent of the Isotopes' offense on the night, as Albuquerque was limited to just four hits the rest of the game by a quartet of O-Royals hurlers.
Omaha seized a lead in the third in another two-out rally started by Gordon, who was hit by a pitch from starter John Ely and immediately scored all the way from first on a double by Ka'aihue to put the Royals ahead 2-1. Ely (1-1) would wind up taking the hard-luck loss after allowing just two runs on five this in six strong frames while walking three and striking out four.
After Ely departed, the Royals erupted for three runs in both the seventh and eighth innings off the âTopes' bullpen. After Omaha loaded the bases on two hits and a walk off Isotopes left-hander Juan Perez, Wilson Betemit hit into a run scoring double-play to increase the visitor's lead to 3-1. Perez then unleashed a wild pitch that allowed another run before yielding to Tim Corcoran, who surrendered back-to-back singles that plated one more tally and made the score 5-1 before coaxing a fly-out to end the inning.
Things did not get better for Corcoran in the eighth as the Royals again scored three times in yet another two-out rally. Gordon started the rally with a single and immediately came around to score on a double by Ka'aihue to increase the lead to 6-1. Betemit then roped a triple scoring Ka'aihue before trotting home on a single by Lough to send Omaha cruising to an 8-1 victory.
Royals relief pitcher Carlos Rosa (1-0) earned the win after pitching three scoreless innings in relief of starter Brad Thompson, who departed after the fourth. Blake Wood and Matt Herges added scoreless frames to ensure the Isotopes vaunted attack would remain dormant.
Albuquerque will look to rebound Saturday when right-hander Josh Towers (1-0, 3.00) takes the mound against Royals righty Anthony Lerew (0-1, 9.00). First pitch is slated for 7:05 PM.
The âTopes opening homestand rolls against Omaha Saturday with a schedule magnet giveaway and an Adult Fun Run. Sunday features a Pink Water Bottle giveaway courtesy of the American Cancer Society.
