Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release
In front of 3,884 fans, the Sky Sox dropped their home opener to the Las Vegas 51s, 6-2 on Friday evening at Security Service Field.
Pitching dominated the game's early goings, as neither team allowed a run until the bottom of the fourth. Sky Sox starter Chaz Roe retired the first 10 Las Vegas batters he faced while the 51s' Brett Cecil sent down his first seven opponents.
The Sky Sox got the scoring going in the fourth as a Michael McKenry single drove in Matt Miller from third. The 51s answered quickly, however, plating catcher J.P. Arencibia in a nerve-racking inning that featured one hit, two errors, and a wild pitch, tying the score at 1-1.
Las Vegas took the lead for good in the top of the sixth as three walks set up a two-RBI Arencibia single, making the score 3-1. Though the Sky Sox would plate an additional runner in the bottom half of the inning to draw within one, that was as close as they would get.
The 51s broke the game open in the top of the ninth as DH Brett Wallace and first baseman Brian Dopirak slugged back-to-back homers to extend the lead to 6-2. Though the Sky Sox forged a rally with two singles and a hit by pitch in the match's final frame, reliever Rommie Lewis induced a ground-ball double play to effectively end the surge.
With the win, the 51s improve to 7-2, first in the Pacific South division, while the Sky Sox fall to 4-5. Las Vegas starter Brett Cecil improves his record to 2-0 while Chaz Roe drops to 0-2.
Tomorrow's game pits Colorado Springs' right hander Alan Johnson (0-0, 0.00) against Las Vegas' Robert Ray (1-0, 1.50). The Sky Sox will look to rebound from their defeat with the first pitch scheduled for 1:05 PM Mountain Time.
