Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
OMAHA, NE - That was quick. Alex Gordon, who homered in his first at-bat for Omaha last night, was activated from the disabled list by Kansas City and has joined the parent Royals in Minnesota. Gordon's rehab assignment was ended earlier than expected after Kansas City second baseman Chris Getz was placed on the DL with a strained right oblique (side) muscle.
Gordon had joined Omaha yesterday for the team's first road game of the year at Albuquerque, continuing the rehab assignment that he began last week with class-A Wilmington. He is coming back from a broken right thumb suffered March 6th while sliding into second base in a Spring Training game.
Serving as the designated hitter and batting third in manager Mike Jirschele's lineup Friday night, Gordon belted a home run to left-center field at Isotopes Park in the first inning to give Omaha a 1-0 lead. He later added two singles in a 3-for-4 effort and scored four runs as the Royals downed the Isotopes 8-1.
In seven games with Wilmington, the former Husker star batted .235 (4-for-17) with three doubles and two RBI. He also collected nine walks and scored seven runs for the Blue Rocks.
In another roster move late yesterday, Omaha reliever Chris Hayes was activated from the disabled list. That move brought the Royals roster back up to its 24-player limit, following the promotion of reliever Josh Rupe to KC.
While the Royals are on the road, fans can catch the action on Omaha's KOIL AM-180, or online at www.oroyals.com. The Royals next game at Rosenblatt Stadium is Saturday, April 24 at 7:05 p.m. when the Albuquerque Isotopes visit to begin a four-game series. That night the first 1,500 fans will receive George Brett powder blue jerseys, courtesy of Conagra.
ABOUT THE ROYALS: For the second year in a row, readers of Omaha Magazine voted the Omaha Royals as Best Omaha Sports Team in the magazine's 18th annual Best of Omaha Awards, published in its January/February 2010 edition. 371,046 fans attended Omaha Royals games in 2009, making the Royals the largest-drawing sports team or event in the metro area last year. The team's total attendance, as well as the average of 5,457 fans per game, marked its largest figures since the 2000 season. Omaha's Triple-A franchise has drawn over 300,000 fans a year to Rosenblatt Stadium for 22 consecutive seasons, dating back to 1988.
