Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
OMAHA â A rain delay of over one hour took Jose Capellan â the Milwaukee Brewers' top pitching prospect â out of the game Sunday afternoon. But, a Royals rally against the Nashville bullpen fell a run short as the Sounds edged Omaha 5-4 in front of 7,109 fans at Rosenblatt Stadium.
Capellan (3-1) retired the first nine Omaha batters he faced. The hard-throwing, 24-year old righty was staked to a 4-0 lead when Nashville broke a scoreless tie in the top of the third.
Royals starter Jimmy Gobble (1-3) allowed two walks, with an infield single sandwiched in between, to the first three Nashville batters in the third. Rickie Weeks hit a line drive sacrifice fly to right to score Ryan Knox with the first run. Prince Fielder followed by popping out to a back pedaling Royals second baseman Luis Ugueto in right-center. Chris Barnwell tagged from third and raced home ahead of Ugueto's throw to the plate, giving Fielder credit for a sac fly. The next batter, Corey Hart, crushed Gobble's 1-2 delivery deep over the wall in left field. His first home run of the season, a two-run shot, made it 4-0.
Capellan walked Adrian Brown to lead off the bottom of the fourth and after a wild pitch and a ground out, Brown scored from third on Matt Diaz' single through the left side to put Omaha on the scoreboard. Later in the inning, Chris Truby plated Diaz with an RBI single to make it 4-2.
Justin Huisman relieved Gobble to begin the sixth and surrendered a leadoff homer to Fielder. His third home run of the season upped Nashville's lead to three runs. Light rain began falling in the top of the sixth and as Trent Durrington grounded out to end the half inning, a downpour triggered the one-hour-and-four-minute delay.
When play resumed, Clint Weibl pitched a perfect bottom of the sixth. But, the Nashville righty walked Chad Santos with two outs in the seventh. Paul Phillips followed with a run-scoring double to the alley in right-center to cut the Sounds' lead to 5-3.
In the home half of the eighth, Nashville reliever Kane Davis retired the leadoff batter, but then gave up three consecutive singles, with Diaz picking up his second RBI of the game and 22nd this season in 19 games with Omaha. With Royals at the corners and one out, Calvin Pickering struck out as Diaz stole second base. A base hit could have given the Royals the lead, but Davis retired Chris Truby on a grounder to third.
Chad Paronto notched his first save for Nashville in the ninth, giving up a one-out single to Phillips, but then inducing Jaime Jones to ground into a 3-6-1 double play.
The series and home stand finale is Monday at 11:05 a.m.: RH Ben Hendrickson (1-3, 5.20) vs. RH Ryan Jensen (1-2, 4.05). Air-time is 10:45 a.m. on Magic 1490 and www.Oroyals.com.
