Sky Sox pull out 3-1 win over Beavers

May 7, 2005

Denny Stark allowed two hits in 5 2/3 innings and a trio of relievers delivered 3 1/3 hitless frames as the Colorado Springs Sky Sox defeated the Portland Beavers, 3-1, on Friday night before 3,485 at PGE Park.

Jeff Baker slugged a two-run triple in the top of the ninth inning to give the Sky Sox a 3-1 lead. Danny Ardoin and Brian Buchanan greeted reliever Brian Falkenborg (3-1) with back-to-back singles before a groundout put both runners in scoring position. Baker then smacked his triple to right field to break the deadlock.

Colorado Springs tied the score in the seventh inning by stringing together three straight two-out singles off Beavers starter Marty McLeary. Ryan Shealy and Jeff Baker got base hits to put runners at first and second. Eddie Garabito singled up the middle to bring in Shealy.

Portland got both of its hits in the sixth inning off Stark to score its only run. Kerry Robinson tripled with two outs and J.J. Furmaniak singled him in. That was the end of Stark's night as he was replaced by Scott Dohmann, who retired all four batters he faced.

Ryan Speier (1-0) came on for the eighth inning and did not allow a run, despite hitting two batters. Speier plunked Benjamin Risinger and pinch-hitter Bobby Scales, but retired Robinson on a comebacker and Furmaniak on a flyout to escape the jam.

Matt Anderson pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to earn his fifth save.

Sky Sox hold on for 3-2 win at Portland

May 8, 2005

With X-Files creator Chris Carter in the Beavers' radio booth, the Colorado Springs Sky Sox turned a sacrifice fly into a double play in the bottom of the eighth inning Saturday night and held on for a 3-2 win at Portland.

Colorado Springs took a 3-0 lead into the eighth, but Adam Hyzdu reached second on an error by left fielder Jeff Pickler and Josh Barfield singled him to third. Ben Johnson followed with a ground-rule double to put Portland on the board.

David Cortes came out of the bullpen to replace Alex Serrano and got Bobby Scales to hit a fly ball to center field. Barfield scored, but Johnson was caught in a rundown and tagged out. Cortes also got the last four outs for his first save.

Colorado Springs starter Jason Young (4-2) went five scoreless innings for the win, allowing five hits and two walks while striking out six. He helped himself at the plate with a two-run double in the second that put the Sky Sox ahead for good.

Tim Olson padded the lead in the fifth with a leadoff homer, his third.

Portland's Justin Germano fell to 0-4 after giving up three runs -- one earned -- on seven hits in five innings. He walked two and struck out four.
