Portland Beavers News Release

PORTLAND, Ore. - Jason Young worked five scoreless innings and added a two-run double as the Colorado Springs Sky Sox defeated the Portland Beavers 3-2 at PGE Park Saturday night.

Young (4-2) struck out six and scattered five hits over 5.0 innings in his second quality start in a row. His two-out double in the second got the Sky Sox (14-13) out to a quick lead and Tim Olson's solo home run off Justin Germano in the fifth proved to be enough, as Colorado Springs withstood a late Portland rally.

Germano (0-4) recovered from a few troublesome situations, but fell in defeat for the fourth time in six starts. Two of his three runs allowed were unearned, as an error by third baseman Bobby Scales extended the second inning. After Danny Ardoin drew a one-out walk, Jeff Baker reached on the error and Young laced a double down the left field line.

Olson's solo shot three innings later upped the Sox lead to 3-0.

Adam Hyzdu reached on a two-base error to begin an eighth-inning rally for the Beavers (13-15). His high fly to deep left ultimately eluded the grasp of outfielder Jeff Pickler. Josh Barfield then singled, and Ben Johnson pushed across a run with a ground-rule double over the fence in right-center. Scales drove in Barfield from third with a sac fly to center, but Johnson froze in an untimely rundown on the play, and Ben Risinger grounded out to pitcher David Cortes to leave the Beavers a run short at 3-2.

Cortes came on after Johnson's double and dodged further trouble for the save.

The Beavers, who left 10 men on, stranded runners at second and third in the third inning and left the bases loaded in the fifth, with Young getting Jon Knott and Hyzdu, the Beavers' No. 3 and 4 hitters, out on strikes.

J.J. Furmaniak worked his way into scoring position in the ninth to no avail.

Kerry Robinson was 2-for-5 for the Beavers, extending his hitting streak to 14 games. Barfield also had two hits.

The two teams continue their series Sunday afternoon at 2:05 p.m.
