Sidewinders give up four in ninth, lose to Grizzlies, 9-7

Tucson, AZ- The Tucson Sidewinders gave up four runs in the top of the ninth to lose Sunday 9-7. The Sidewinders fell behind after the first inning 3-1. Fresno added another run in the top of the third to take a 4-1 lead. The Sidewinders offense woke up in the bottom of the third scoring five runs to make the score 6-4. Four of the runs in the inning came off a grand slam by SS Sergio Santos, the Sidewinder 3rd slam of the year and Santos' 4th homer of the season.

Tucson led 7-5 heading into the top of the ninth when Fresno added four runs, three of which came off of a RF Todd Linden home run to right field, to take the lead 9-7. The Sidewinders went down in order in the bottom of the ninth to RHP Kevin Correia who earned his seventh save of the season.

The Tucson offense was led by SS Sergio Santos who went 1-4 with a run, a walk, 5 RBI, and a grand slam. 2B Andy Green added his second triple in as many days going 1-4 with a run and a walk. CF Jose Cruz Jr. went 1-3 with a double, run scored and an RBI while on a Major League Rehabilitation Assignment recovering from a lower back strain.

Two pitchers made their Sidewinders debut on Sunday, starter LHP Bill Murphy and reliever LHP Armando Almanza. Murphy went 5 innings giving up 4 runs on 4 hits, 5 walks, and 2 strikeouts. Almanza went one and two thirds innings giving up 3 runs, 0 earned, on 1 hit, 2 walks and a strikeout. The win was credited to RHP Brandon Puffer for the Grizzlies with the loss to RHP Winston Abreu who went a third of an inning giving up 2 runs.

The loss moves the first place Sidewinders to 17-14 on the year, 3-4 on the home stand. The series and home stand finale will take place tomorrow at Tucson Electric Park. First pitch scheduled for 6:30 PM. Scheduled starters are RHP Edgar Gonzalez (2-1, 2.70) for the Sidewinders and RHP Jerome Williams (0-1,11.57) for the Grizzlies.
