
Sidewinders give up two in top of ninth, lose to Fresno, 8-7

Tucson, AZ - The Tucson Sidewinders gave up a two run homerun in the top of the ninth to lose to the Fresno Grizzlies 8-7 Saturday night. The Sidewinders faced an early 4-2 deficit giving up three unearned runs in the first two innings. The Sidewinders added two in the bottom of the second to tie the game at 4-4. The Grizzlies added one more in the top of the third to take a 5-4 lead. Tucson took command of the game in the bottom of the inning when C Craig Ansman hit a towering two out three run home run to deep left center field to make the score 7-5. The Grizzlies added one in top of the eighth when PH Yamid Haad hit a double scoring C Justin Knoedler to make the score 7-6. The score stayed that way until with two outs in the top of the ninth when Fresno 3B Mike Cervenak hit a two run home run to take the lead 8-7 off of Tucson RHP Brandon Medders. The Sidewinders went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the ninth against RHP Kevin Correia who earned his 6th save.
The Sidewinders offense was led by 1B Conor Jackson and RF Carlos Quentin. Jackson went 2-for-4 with 2 runs and an RBI on his 23rd birthday. Jackson was recently named the Diamondbacks Minor League Player-Of-The-Month. Quentin went 2-for-3 with a run, RBI, and a walk.
Starter RHP Phil Stockman had a rough outing going two and one third innings giving up five runs, two earned, on four hits with four walks and one strike out in his first start since returning from the disabled list on May 2nd (blisters). LHP Chris Michalak came into the game in relief of Stockman and went five scoreless innings giving up five hits two strike outs and no walks.
The defeat moves the first place Sidewinders 17-13 on the season 3-3 on the current home stand. The winning pitcher was RHP Scott Munter (1-3, 5.56) the losing pitcher was RHP Brandon Medders (1-1, 4.22).
The series continues tomorrow at Tucson Electric Park, first pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. The scheduled starters are LHP Bill Murphy (0-0,0.00) for the Sidewinders and RHP Matt Cain (3-0, 2.67) for the Grizzlies.
