Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
OMAHA - At the start of their 16-game College World Series trip back on June 13, nobody could blame Omaha Royals players if they were dreading the outcome. However, two weeks later, the Royals might be reluctant to return to Rosenblatt Stadium later this week. The Royals have gone 10-4 on their annual mammoth journey and need wins tonight and tomorrow night at Iowa to climb to .500 on the season (40-40) and to post their best record ever since the CWS trip was lengthened to 16 games in 2000.
The Royals have won six of their past seven games on the trip. In the 14 contests overall, the Royals have outscored their four opponents 85-58, bashing more than twice as many home runs (25-12) as their foes. Omaha outfielder Aaron Guiel has hit five home runs on the trip, including one in each of the past four games. The Royals sport the best road record (25-21) of any team in the Pacific Coast League.
With just one win over the next two nights, the Royals would equal the most successful 16-game CWS trip -- Omaha went 11-5 on the trip in 2003. In most of the other seasons, the Royals did well to play around .500 on the four-city jaunt (7-9 in 2004; 9-7 in 2002; 7-10 in 2001 when it was 17 games; 8-8 in 2000).
Following an off day on Wednesday, the Royals will attempt to carry over their winning ways to Rosenblatt Stadium. The club has the worst home winning record (13-19) of any PCL club. The Royals open a quick, four-game series/home stand Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. when they take on the Albuquerque Isotopes.
The home stand will culminate this Sunday, July 3 with the 21st annual Omaha World-Herald Fireworks Show, following the 6:05 p.m. game. UMB Bank will present a family festival with attractions and live entertainment from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. outside the stadium gates. The event is open to the public with a game ticket.
Buses will transport fans from the Omaha Civic Auditorium at 18th and Capitol Avenue from 3:45 to 7 p.m. and will return after the fireworks. Free parking is available at Omaha Park 5 and all City of Omaha surface lots near the Civic Auditorium. A second shuttle location is Westroads Mall at 102nd and Nicholas Streets entrance (north of Galyans). The shuttle service is $2 round trip, with a portion of the proceeds donated to the Papillion Little League.
Gates for the July 3 game will open at 4 p.m. For tickets, call the Royals at 738-5100, visit www.etix.com, or stop by the Royals ticket office at Rosenblatt Stadium. Adult ticket prices are $10 for reserved seats and $8 for general admission (bleachers). Military discounts. Military discounts ($1 off) will be honored.
