Fresno Grizzlies News Release
Fresno, CA-Kevin Correia has been named the Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Week for the week of June 20-26. Correia joins teammate Matt Cain as the only Grizzlies pitchers to win the award in the 2005 season.
The 24-year-old Correia went 2-0 with a 0.75 ERA last week, with wins over Salt Lake and Colorado Springs. In just his second start of the season, he allowed just four hits and struck out five in five innings of work in a 19-2 win over Salt Lake. He followed that up with seven strong innings against Colorado Springs allowing one run on five hits in the Grizzlies 3-2 victory.
After spending a majority of the season in the Grizzlies' bullpen, Correia was made a starter after Jesse Foppert was recalled by San Francisco. Correia was primarily a starter for the Giants' organization for his first three professional seasons before moving to the bullpen late into the 2004 season.
Deemed as Fresno's closer at the beginning of 2005, Correia struggled with the role compiling a 1-2 record with a 7.42 ERA despite leading the team with seven saves in 28 appearances. The move to the starting role has revitalized Correia as he has improved his record to 3-2 and lowered his ERA to 6.07 in his team-leading 31 appearances.
The Grizzlies will return home on July 4 for a 6:05 P.M. contest against the Las Vegas 51s. For tickets or ticket information, contact the Grizzlies Ticket Office at 559-320-TIXS or visit the Grizzlies online at www.fresnogrizzlies.com.
