Salt Lake Bees News Release
SALT LAKE CITY-The Angels announced today that Stingers starter Corey Lee has been given his unconditional release and RHP Scott Schneider has been activated to Salt Lake's roster from the inactive list. The announcement was made by the Angels' Director of Player Development Tony Reagins. Lee requested his release in order to sign with a professional baseball club in Japan. Schneider returns to Salt Lake after attending to a family matter this past weekend.
Lee, 30, has been the Stingers' best starter in 2005. He posted a 6-2 record and 2.72 ERA (79.1 IP - 24 ER) with 62 hits allowed, 40 walks and 77 strikeouts in 14 games (13 starts) for the Stingers. Lee ranks third in the PCL in ERA (2.72) and leads Salt Lake with 77 strikeouts. He was named to the PCL All-Star team last week.
Lee missed the entire 2003 with an elbow injury that required "Tommy John" surgery. He signed a minor league contract as a free agent with the Angels on May 7, 2004 and made his first start for double-A Arkansas on May 28. He posted a 2-6 record and 4.27 ERA (65.1 IP - 31 ER) in 14 starts for the Travelers in 2004. He went 0-1 with a 7.64 ERA (17.2 IP - 15 ER) in four starts for the Stingers last season.
Lee picked up a loss in his only Major League appearance with the Texas Rangers on August 24, 1999, allowing a three-run home run to 1B Tino Martinez in one relief inning. He was originally selected by Texas in the first round (32nd overall pick) in the 1996 free agent draft. Lee was traded by Texas to the White Sox on December 17, 2001, completing the trade that sent 3B Herbert Perry to the Rangers for a player to be named. He was granted free agency on Oct. 15, 2002 and then signed with the Yankees on November 14, 2002. He was released by the Yankees on April 16, 2003. Lee played baseball for North Carolina State, where he averaged nine strikeouts per nine innings pitched.
Schneider, 27, is 1-1 with a 5.73 ERA (37.2 IP - 24 ER) with 20 walks and 28 strikeouts in 20 games (two starts) for the Stingers this season. Originally selected by the Angels in the 12th round of the 2000 free agent draft, Schneider currently resides in Mesa, AZ.
