Royals Come Up Empty Handed in South Carolina, 5-3

North Charleston, SC - The Reading Royals of the ECHL (22-16-1-3=48, 1st East Division), affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League and the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League, were defeated by the South Carolina Stingrays (30-9-2-4=66, 1st South Division), 5-3, at the North Charleston Coliseum in North Charleston. The Royals clawed back from one goal deficits twice during the game but gave up a goal with 4:53 that proved to be the game winner. The loss dropped Reading to 0-5-1 in the six games played in the nine year history of the team at the North Charleston Coliseum. Goaltender Matt Dalton (Loss, 13-11-0-2; 37/41, 1 eng) sustained his second loss in two days to the Stingrays. Shane Connelly (Win, 9-7-2-1; 27/30) maintained his unbeaten record as a member of South Carolina (6-0-1-0). The Royals were blanked on the power play (0-5). The Stingrays scored a critical late second period goal while playing with the man advantage (1-4).
Reading struck first when a wild hop off the back glass landed the puck at the top of the Stingrays' crease, where Andrew Sarauer settled, pulled the puck to his forehand, and stuffed it home for his third goal in two games and ninth of the year 11:53 into the first period. South Carolina tied the game with 45.4 seconds remaining in the first, when Jake Hauswirth fired a low shot from the high slot and then corralled his own rebound and fired it top shelf for his eighth of the year.
The Stingrays took their first lead of the game 14:01 into the second when Trent Campbell slipped a pass to Hauswirth in the mid-slot, where he took a one-timer that fluttered into the upper left corner of the net behind a screened Dalton. Reading bounced back to tie at two fifty-six seconds later when Marc Cavosie cut through the middle of the ice and fired a wrister on net that was stopped by Connelly. The rebound dropped to the top of the crease where Ben McLeod punched it home for his third in two games-and his tenth of the year. Late in the second, the Stingrays were awarded a power play when Charlie Kronschnabel took exception to a questionable hit by Matt Scherer-that appeared to be from behind-on a Royal player on the left wall in Reading's defensive end. Kronschnabel was assessed with a roughing minor, and South Carolina capitalized on the chance. While on the power play, Hauswirth slipped into a seam deep in the slot where he fired from point blank range. Dalton made the stop on that shot, but the rebound fell to the right side of the net where Rob Ricci stuffed it in for his seventeenth of the year.
Reading tied the game at three eight minutes into the third, when Ben Gordon took a feed from Olivier Labelled at the top of the left circle and uncorked a blast that beat Connelly high to the stick side. But, once again, South Carolina climbed back on top with what proved to be the game winner with 4:57 remaining in regulation. The Stingrays pressed hard off the forecheck and created a turnover behind the Royals' net. Trevor Bruess ended up with possession at the right side of the Royals goal and forced a pass through the crease towards the left pipe where it went off the leg of Dain Prewitt and into the net for his sixth of the year. The Stingrays got a 175 foot empty netter by Bruess with fifty-five seconds left in regulation to ice their thirtieth win of the year in front of a team record crowd of 10,570 at the North Charleston Coliseum.
Reading returns to action on Wednesday night (January 27, 2010 @ 7:05 pm) when the Gwinnett Gladiators visit the Sovereign Center for the first time this season. The first 1500 fans that night get a collector's card set of the Royals All-Time Great Goaltenders (Barry Brust, Yutaka Fukufuji, Jon Quick, Cody Rudkowsky, and Jeff Sanger). The Royals game night broadcast on the Royals Radio Network presented by Transmissions by Arbogast will kick off with the pre-game warm-up show at 6:35 pm.
