Gladiators fall to Everblades 5-1

The Gwinnett Gladiators dropped their fourth consecutive game losing to the Florida Everblades 5-1 on Saturday night at the Germain Arena in Estero, Florida. Gwinnett drops to 18-17-3-2 on the season with the loss. Gwinnett is now 8 points out of third period in the ECHL's South Division.

Danny Taylor posted 15 saves in the first period for the Gladiators to keep the game scoreless after the opening stanza. The netminder made a sprawling save with seven seconds left in the first period as the Everblades out-shot Gwinnett 15-6 through the first 20 minutes.

Florida broke the scoreless tie in the second period on a goal by Ross Carlson 5:58 into the period. Carlson found a rebound off the left wing post and bounced the puck past Taylor for the marker. Mathieu Roy and Milan Gajic collected assists on the goal of the Everblades.

Mike Bayrack pushed the Everblades lead to 2-0 deflecting the puck past Taylor at 6:55 of the period. Ryan VanBuskirk ripped a slap shot from the point that Bayrack got a piece of for the goal. Kevin Baker added an assist.

Gwinnett got back within a goal on the power play at 11:28 of the second period. Dan Sullivan found a loose puck in the slot and ripped a slap shot over a sprawled Barry Brust for his 5th goal of the season. Matt Caruana and Adam Berti had the helpers on the power play goal for Gwinnett.

The Everblades regained the two-goal advantage on Gajic's second goal of the season. Gajic slid past the Gladiators defense, took an outlet pass at the Gwinnett blue like and slipped the puck past Taylor for the marker at 17:29 of the second period. Brad Zanon fed Gajic for an assist on the marker.

Bayrack notched his second marker of the contest with 54 seconds left in the middle stanza to give the Everblades a 4-1 lead. Bayrack finished an odd-man rush for Florida ripping a slap shot past Taylor from the top of the left wing circle for the goal. Elgin Reid and Carlson notched the assists on the goal for Florida.

Brandon Buck rounded out the scoring in the contest with just one second left in the third period sliding the puck past Taylor for the marker. Gajic had his second assist of the game on the goal for Florida.

Gwinnett's lone goal came on the man advantage as the Gladiators went 1-for-5 on the power play. Florida did not score on the power play despite five chances. Taylor finished with 35 saves in the losing effort for Gwinnett.

With the loss to the Everblades, Gwinnett is now winless in their last four games. Gwinnett continues on the road for their next four games as they head north to take on Reading and Elmira for a pair of games each.

The Gladiators continue their 7th season in the ECHL on Wednesday, January 27th @ Reading at 7:05 p.m. The Gladiators are the AA affiliate of the Atlanta Thrashers and Columbus Blue Jackets and play all home games at the 11,355-seat Arena at Gwinnett Center, located just off I-85 on Sugarloaf Parkway in Duluth.
