Florida Everblades News Release
ESTERO, FL-- The Florida Everblades scorched the Gwinnett Gladiators 5 to 1 in their fifth straight victory. Everblades offense blazed in the second period with goals from Ross Carlson (13), Mike Bayrack (5) and Milan Gajic (2). Gwinnett's lone tally also came in the second when Daniel Sullivan took advantage of a downed Barry Brust to avoid the shutout. With one second remaining in the third period Brandon Buck rocketed the puck from short range, ending the contest 5-1.
During the first period, Everblades offense peppered Gladiator goalie Danny Taylor with 15 shots on goal. There were several quality scoring opportunities, including a wrap-around, attempt by Brandon Buck. Midway through the period, the 'Blades looked to score when Elgin Reid skated into the Gladiator end and he sent the puck up the boards to meet Ernie Hartlieb who one timed it from the point. Taylor blocked the shot and the face-off stayed in Gwinnett's end.
Gwinnett went on the power play at the 8:22 mark and the Everblades' penalty kill unit went to work as Scott Hotham averted a dangerous puck passed in front of Barry Brust's net. Florida's defense held Gwinnett to only six shots in the first period and 0 for 2 with the extra man advantage. The period concluded 0-0.
Florida's second-stanza offensive streak started when Ross Carlson went top-shelf off of a pass from Reid and Milan Gajic to score his 13th goal of the season. Mike Bayrack followed up with an insurance marker at 6:55 to make it 2-0. Gwinnett felt the pressure of the two-goal deficit and played hard to the body. Daniel Sullivan took the rebound and shot the puck in over Barry Brust.
The Everblades answered back when Milan Gajic, in his second game back from an injury that saw him unable to play since November, skated one-on-one with goalie Danny Taylor and shot a textbook breakaway shot to put the Everblades up 3-1.
Mike Bayrack tallied his second goal of the night with a blistering shot straight into Taylor's net. At 16:14, Florida's Benn Olson and Gwinnett's Sullivan dropped their gloves in a round of fisticuffs. The scuffle ended with both players receiving five minute major penalties for fighting and leaving the ice for the remainder of the period.
The third period witnessed a dominating performance from Brust when he made a sprawling kick save in the middle of the period. Gwinnett recieved the rebound, but it was useless as Brust snapped it from the air to freeze the score 4-1. The Everblades tallied their final goal as Brandon Buck shot the puck with enough force to break his stick and Florida took their fifth straight victory ending at 5-1.
