West Valley City, UTAH - The Ontario Reign, proud affiliate of the NHL Los Angeles Kings, defeated the Utah Grizzlies, 5-3, on Saturday night at the E Center before a crowd of 4,562.
Ontario was the first to get on the board when left winger Chris Curran got a short handed break away and shot the puck past Grizzlies goaltender Mitch O'Keefe less than 2 minutes into the 1st period.
Utah left winger Ryan Kinasewich started the scoring in the 2nd period at 2:47 when he shot the puck past Ontario net minder Mike Zacharias. The tying goal was assisted by left wingers A.J. Perry and Dylan Hunter.
The Grizzlies took a 2-1 lead with a shot from Kinasewich that was tipped in by A.J. Perry only a couple minutes apart from Utah's first goal of the game.
Ontario answered back and tied the game at 2-2 with a goal from right wing Mike Howe barely 30 seconds after the Grizzlies had taking the lead. Forward Michael Pelech and defenseman Andrew Martens assisted on the play.
Only 37 seconds later, Ontario took a 3-2 lead when right winger Tony Voce one timed the puck into the back of the net with assists from center Jon Francisco and right wing Sean O'Connor.
Toward the end of the 2nd period, defenseman Chad Starling passed the puck to Voce who then scored his 2nd goal of the night. Francisco picked up his 2nd assist of the night and the Reign took a 4-2 lead.
The 3rd period started with the Reign killing off a 5 on 3 disadvantage. The Reign increased their lead at 11:13 in the 3rd period with a power play goal from Greg Hogeboom. Defenseman David Walker and left wing Peter Lenes assisted on the play and the Reign were up 5-2. Grizzlies Kinasewich scored a power play goal, his 2nd goal of the game, with less than 2 minutes left in the 3rd period. The late minute push came too late for Utah and the Reign took the win with a final score Reign 5, Grizzlies 3.
