Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
OMAHA, NE - The Omaha Royals scored six runs in the third inning and cruised to a 7-3 win over the Memphis Redbirds Monday night in front of 2,118 fans at Rosenblatt Stadium. Omaha's 12th victory in its last 16 games, combined with Iowa's 8-6 loss to Nashville, leaves the Royals alone in second place in the PCL American North division trailing the Cubs by 2.5 games.
Monday's game at Rosenblatt was scoreless entering the bottom of the third, when the Royals sent eleven batters to the plate, scoring six runs on six hits and two walks to chase Memphis starter P.J. Walters (7-5), who was charged with six runs on eight hits and three walks in 2.2 innings.
Omaha strung together RBI singles by Scott Thorman, Jordan Parraz, Kurt Mertins and Cody Clark and a two-run single from David Lough. The last three hits came with two outs in the inning.
Brian Bannister, making his first rehab assignment start with Omaha, allowed a hit to the first batter of the game, Tyler Greene. But, the 29-year old right-hander retired the final five batters he faced. Luis Mendoza (10-8) came on in the third inning and issued a leadoff walk, but then proceeded to set down ten straight and 14 of the next 15 Redbirds he faced.
Memphis was able to score three runs, only one earned, off Mendoza in the eighth inning. Mike Moustakas' eighth error in 38 games at third base for Omaha helped the Redbirds score two unearned runs. Mendoza wound up allowing one earned run on four hits in 6.0 innings to win his fifth consecutive appearance.
Brian Anderson, the center fielder-converted-to-reliever made his second Triple-A appearance and was lights out in the ninth, striking out Amaury Cazana, Joe Mather and Mark Hamilton in order.
Parraz hit his tenth home run of the year for Omaha, his third against Memphis. Moustakas went 0-for-3 with a walk, ending his hitting streak at 12 games.
Omaha (72-58) will look to take three of four from Memphis (71-59) and earn a split of the 16-game season series with a win Tuesday, when the Royals host the Redbirds at 12:05 p.m. Royals lefty Blaine Hardy (2-3, 2.75) faces Memphis right-hander Brandon Dickson (9-8, 3.32).
Enjoy 1/2-price Omaha Steaks burgers! It's also the final Ballpark Bingo Bash in the Hall of Fame Room. The day is also presented by 1110 KFAB.
