Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release
The Fresno Grizzlies scored 11 runs in the sixth inning as they went on to defeat the Colorado Springs Sky Sox 12-3 on Monday evening at Security Service Field in front of 1,791 fans.
The Sky Sox pushed ahead to an early 2-0 lead on a sacrifice fly by Matt Miller in the first and a solo homer by Michael McKenry in the second but the lead would not last.
Fresno sent 17 batters to the plate in the sixth and knocked out 11 hits, all singles, while scoring their 11 runs. Three batters, Eugenio Velez, Ryan Rohlinger and Matt Yourkin, all had two hits in the inning and every hitter in the Fresno lineup, except catcher Steve Holm, had a run scored and/or an RBI. The Grizzlies made it 12-2 in the eighth on an RBI groundout by Rohlinger who finished the night 2-for-5 with three RBI.
An RBI single by Travis Metcalf in the bottom of the ninth would cut the lead to 12-3 but Geno Espineli worked out of the inning to finish the game.
Matt Yourkin (7-7) started for Fresno and picked up the win while Kurt Birkins (5-8) took the loss.
The final game of the four-game series is set for tomorrow night at 6:05 PM with the Sox sending out RH Alan Johnson (10-7, 5.63) to face RH Kevin Pucetas (4-7, 6.06).
NOTES: Miller's sac fly in the first was the 19th of his Sky Sox career which ties him with Beau Allred for second on the all-time franchise list. Next up on the list is Jim Tatum with 20. McKenry's homer was his 10th of the season with all of them coming at Security Service Field. Greg Smith was activated from the disabled list before the game and started for the Sox.
