Early Lead Enough for Sounds
August 23, 2010 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Iowa Cubs News Release
The Nashville Sounds struck for eight runs in the first two innings and went on to defeat Iowa 8-6, Monday night at Principal Park. The loss drops the I-Cubs to 74-55 and combined with Omaha's victory over Memphis, shrinks their lead in the American North division to 2.5 games.
Nashville roughed up Iowa starter Austin Bibens-Dirkx from the start, scoring three runs in the first inning. After two outs, the Sounds strung together four hits, which included two doubles, to plate three runs.
The Sounds picked right where they left off in the second inning, tagging Bibens-Dirkx for five more runs which all scored on home runs. Sounds' pitcher Sam Narron led off the inning with his second-career long ball and Mat Gamel and Luis Cruz each smacked two-run shots to make the score 8-0 in favor of Nashville.
Cruz led Nashville and finished the game 3-for-3 with three RBI and a single shy of the cycle.
The Cubs made a game of it late, coming to within two runs of Nashville. Trailing 8-1, Iowa put up three runs in the sixth and two in the seventh to close the lead to 8-6.
Bibens-Dirkx (5-2) suffered the loss for Iowa, his second consecutive losing effort with Iowa. He gave up eight runs on 10 hits over five innings while striking out five batters.
Sam Narron (8-7) picked up the win for the Sounds, allowing six runs (two earned) on 11 hits over six innings. Brandon Kintzler pitched a perfect ninth inning for his third save on the year.
Iowa and Nashville meet tomorrow for a 12:05 p.m. tilt in the series finale. Sounds' RH Josh Butler (3-1, 6.08) will face Cubs' RH Chris Carpenter (0-0, 0.00) who is making his Triple-A debut after being promoted from double-A Tennessee.
