New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, NJ - The Brockton Rox broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the tenth inning with two bases loaded walks off New Jersey Jackals reliever Hunter Davis as the Jackals fell at home 3-1 against the Rox in front of 3,864 fans on Camp Day at Yogi Berra Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
In the pitchers duel between New Jersey's Tom Atlee and Brockton's Rolando Viera, the Jackals struck first with a run in the bottom of the second inning as DH Luke Allen led off with a single and scored three batters later when LF Andrew Larsen laced an RBI double over the head of Rox CF Ervin Alcantara to put the Jackals up 1-0. For the Jackals, Atlee cruised through seven scoreless innings. The veteran right-hander allowed seven hits and didn't issue a walk while fanning five hitters. However, Viera matched him nearly pitch-for-pitch, lasting eight innings and yielding one run on seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Despite their efforts, neither starter factored in the decision.
With Atlee out of the game in the Justin Barnes on to pitch the top of the eighth inning, Brockton evened the score at 1-1. SS Dominic Ramos singled to begin the frame and was sacrificed to second by 2B Melvin Falu. Later in the inning, 3B Phillip Cuadrado singled Ramos home.
In the top of the tenth, Davis loaded the bases with two outs before walking both DH Jason Colson and 1B Francisco Lebron to force in the go-ahead runs and give the Rox a 3-1 advantage. In the bottom of the inning, Rox closer Jerry Dunn entered and notched his eleventh save of the season despite allowing two hits in a near-comeback by New Jersey.
Davis (2-3) took the loss after allowing two runs on one hit in two innings of work. Reliever Matt Zachary (1-0) earned the win for Brockton, tossing a scoreless ninth. The Jackals and Rox continue their four-game series tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. when Aaron Tressler takes the hill for New Jersey against Brockton's Wayne Lundgren at Yogi Berra Stadium. If you can't make it out to the ballpark, you can catch every inning via live webcast at www.jackals.com with the broadcast beginning five minutes prior to first pitch.
