Rox Get Walk-Off Win over Honkers

(Rochester, MN) - For the second consecutive night, the St. Cloud Rox handed the Rochester Honkers a late heartbreaking loss as they defeated the Honkers 8-7 in 11 innings on Wednesday June 26 at Joe Faber Field in St. Cloud, MN.

Carter Burgess (Sam Houston State) picked up his first hit of the night in the top of first inning as he singled with one out. He later scored on a two-out double from Alex Greer (Iowa Western) to give the Honkers an early 1-0 lead. With the hit, Burgess extended his hitting streak to 14 games.

Tim Colwell singled with one out in the bottom half of the first and later scored on a single by Charlie Morgan to tie the game at 1-1 after the first inning. Burgess and Tyler Baker (Wichita State) started the top of the third inning with back-to-back singles. Burgess scored on a ground out from Greer, while Baker came in on a bases loaded walk drawn by Jeff Campbell (North Dakota) to give Rochester a 3-1 lead.

St. Cloud got one run back in its half of the third inning, but Burgess responded with a solo homerun, his third of the season, over the left field fence to give Rochester a 4-2 lead after three and a half innings. Clay Williamson was hit by a pitch to start the bottom of the fourth inning and Brad Strong singled to put the tying run on base with no outs. Both runners advanced a base on a sacrifice bunt by Devin Pearson. Blake Headley followed with a two-run single to tie the game. Headley later scored on a RBI single from Colwell to give the Rox a 5-4 lead after four innings.

Burgess and Baker started the top half of the sixth inning with a pair of singles and both runners came around to score on a double from Greer as the Honkers regained the lead at 6-5. Brian Schwarzbach (Pennsylvania) started his first inning of work in the bottom of the seventh by hitting Adam Martin and walking Morgan. Luke Weber followed with a single to center field, and Martin scored on an error by Greer on the play, but Schwarzbach was able to retire the next three batters and keep the score tied at 6-6.

Rochester starting pitcher Matt Kent (Texas A&M) allowed five runs, four earned, on nine hits in six innings. Rox starting pitcher Kyle Davis allowed four runs on eight hits in four innings of work. Schwarzbach and Seth Fuller (Black Hawk College) worked out of jams in the eighth and ninth innings to force a tenth inning. Campbell led the inning off by drawing a walk, Kalei Hanawahine (Hawaii) followed with a single to put runners on the corners with just one out. Burgess reached on a fielder's choice to score Tucker Tharp (Kansas,) who was pinch-running for Campbell, to take the 7-6 lead.

Colwell, Martin, and Dylan Breshears delivered consecutive one-out singles for St. Cloud in the bottom of the tenth inning to tie the game at 7-7 and force an 11th inning. Clay Williamson drew a lead-off walk to start the bottom of the 11th inning and scored the game-winning run on a two-out walk-off single by Blake Headley.

Fuller took the loss (2-1) for the Honkers, while Adam Maxon picked up the win (2-1) for the Rox. Burgess led the Rochester offense by going 4-for-6 with a homerun, two RBI, and four runs scored. Greer added three RBI and a pair of doubles on the night.

Rochester (15-12) will continue its eight-game road trip with a doubleheader in Alexandria with the Alexandria Blue Anchors on Thursday June 27. Nick Dolsky (Oklahoma State) is scheduled to start the first game, beginning at 6:05 p.m., and Brandon Stennis (Doane College) is slated to make the start in the second game. Both games will be seven innings. The doubleheader will begin a three-game series in Alexandria before a three-game series in Willmar before the Honkers return home to Mayo Field to host the Rox on Tuesday July 2 at 7:05 p.m.
