Mallards Can Sweep Bombers With Win Tonight
June 26, 2013 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Madison Mallards News Release
Madison, WI - The Madison Mallards (15-10) hope to make some ground in the Northwoods League South Division standings with a sweep over the Battle Creek Bombers (12-14) Wednesday night at home. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
The Mallards are currently two games behind the La Crosse Loggers (18-9) and 1.5 behind the Lakeshore Chinooks (17-9) for the South Division lead.
The Mallards won the opening game of a two-game set against the Bombers Tuesday night by a score of 11-6.
Right fielder Drew Weeks (North Florida) provided the bulk of the Mallards offense by going 5-for-5 with six RBIs. Right-hander Cam Verbeke (Illinois State) got the win by pitching three innings of relief.
The Mallards put the game away in the bottom of the seventh by scoring four runs to pull ahead by five runs. Weeks capped off the inning by hitting a two-out, two-run single up the middle with the bases loaded.
Jamie Nunn (Appalachian State) is looking to rebound from a subpar performance in his last start. He allowed four runs (three earned) on three hits and didn't make it to the fifth inning in his last appearance. So far on the season, Nunn is 1-1 with a 2.25 ERA in 20 innings pitched.
The Bombers will look to Alex Tukey (Minnesota) to stop the team's three-game slide. The San Diego, California native is 0-1 on the season and has an ERA of 3.95 in 13.2 innings.
RBI King
Weeks moved into first place in the Northwoods League in RBIs last night with his six-RBI performance. He has now driven in 33 runs, which is three more than Wisconsin's Matt Tellor (Southeast Missouri), who sits in second place. Mallards outfielder Tate Matheny's (Missouri State) total of 21 ranks sixth in the league.
