Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - Xavier Paul delivered the eventual game-deciding runs with a two-out, two-run single in the fifth as the Albuquerque Isotopes defeated the Round Rock Express 4-2 in Pacific Coast League action Thursday night at The Dell Diamond. The Express (33-43) hold a two-games-to-one lead in the series, but the Isotopes (37-35) lead the season series 4-3.
Jay Gibbons' one-out RBI single in the top of the fourth snapped a scoreless tie; the hit scored Ivan De Jesus Jr., who led off the inning with a double. One-out singles from Timo Perez and De Jesus in the fifth followed a failed sacrifice attempt and loaded the bases. Paul then drilled a 2-1 Shane Loux offering to right-center, scoring two runs.
Isotopes starter Alberto Bastardo and two relievers made that lead stand. Bastardo (2-0) worked 6.2 innings and allowed two runs on five hits and a walk with two strikeouts. He was scoreless through the first six frames, using only 65 pitches to that point.
Loux (2-4) took the loss; he surrendered three runs on seven hits and a walk with five strikeouts over 6.0 innings.
The Express pushed Bastardo from the game in the seventh. Tommy Everidge singled with one out, and Matt Kata followed with a walk. Two batters and one out later, David Cook doubled home both base runners to pull the Express within a run.
That was as close as Round Rock would get, though, as John Link entered the game after Cook's double and induced an inning-ending foul-out from Brian Esposito. A single, two Express errors and a perfectly executed suicide squeeze pushed another Isotopes run across in the top of the eighth; Hoffman scored on the play as Justin Sellers lay down the RBI sacrifice bunt.
Round Rock had another chance as Drew Meyer doubled with two outs in the eighth and Brian Bogusevic followed with a walk. However, Everidge, who hit safely in his first three at bats, flew out to deep left, ending the inning. Scott Dohmann pitched a perfect ninth with two strikeouts for his seventh save of the season.
Everidge finished the night 3-for-4 in his first game with the Express. His was the lone multiple-hit night for Round Rock.
De Jesus led the way for Albuquerque, going 3-for-5. Perez and Lucas May each had two hits.
Round Rock and Albuquerque conclude the four-game series Friday with a 7:05 p.m. CDT first pitch at The Dell Diamond. Southpaw Wesley Wright (3-0, 4.93 ERA) will start for the Express, while the Isotopes counter with right-hander Jesus Castillo (0-0, 0.00 ERA).
