Rainiers Roll By Salt Lake
June 24, 2010 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Tacoma Rainiers News Release
The Tacoma Rainiers rode the arm of starter Michael Pineda to a 6-2 win over Salt Lake at Cheney Stadium on Wednesday.
A top prospect in the Seattle Mariners farm system, Pineda lived up to the hype and earned a win in his first start since joining the Rainiers from Double-A West Tennessee on June 20. The right-hander pitched six scoreless innings and allowed just one hit with three walks and five strikeouts. He retired the first 11 batters he faced and threw 60 of his 90 total pitches for strikes.
Tacoma's offense did their part as well, contributing all six runs on 10 hits in the second through the fifth innings.
Outfielder Greg Halman drove in the first run with an RBI single to center that scored David Winfree in the second. Catcher Adam Moore was responsible for the second with a double that drove in Matt Tuiasospo from first one inning later in the third.
Mike Wilson's two-run home run in the fourth upped the Rainiers lead to 4-0, while Brad Nelson's single and a sacrifice fly from the outfielder Winfree added the final two runs in the fifth.
The Bees lone scoring effort came in the form of two runs in the top of the seventh thanks to a two-run home run from outfielder Terry Evans.
Salt Lake starter Tim Kiely was tagged with the loss, his second in as many starts, after allowing all six Rainiers runs to score on 10 hits over five innings, while walking two and fanning two.
The Rainiers look to make it two wins in a row when they return to action for a doubleheader against Salt Lake at 6 p.m. on Thursday. Slated to take the mound for Tacoma in the first game of the double dip is left-hander Luke French, with fellow left-hander Ryan Feierabend set to go in the second game.
