Rough Road Trip Continues for LumberKings

Clinton LumberKings News Release

South Bend, IN - A rocky 12-game road trip continued Wednesday night for the Clinton LumberKings. An 11-5 loss to the South Bend Silver Hawks halted a one-game winning streak and marked the fifth loss in six games on the current three-city trip.

The Silver Hawks hung four runs on LumberKings starter Omar Poveda in the second inning. Orlando Mercado and Pedro Ciriaco each smashed RBI doubles, and Trey Hendricks, Manuel Ferrer and Leyson Septimo added RBI singles in the frame.

Poveda (0-2) would run into more trouble in the bottom of the fourth. After loading the bases, Mercado again came through, this time with a single that plated two runs. That hit would end Poveda's night, but not his run total. With J.B. Diaz on in relief, both inherited runners would score on Frank Curreri's bases-clearing double. Poveda's final line score included eight earned runs in just 3 1/3 innings.

South Bend lefthander Ryan Schreppel (1-2) pitched seven solid innings, allowing just two runs on four hits in getting the win. Silver Hawks reliever Jonathan Valverde allowed three runs to the L-Kings, but finished up the game with two innings of work.

Second baseman Jose Vallejo was a bright spot for the LumberKings offense, going 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Brian Valichka knocked in two RBI's for the L-Kings as well.

Seven Silver Hawks had multi-hit nights, with four of those players notching three hits. The loss drops the LumberKings further into the Midwest League West cellar. Their 6-14 record is six games back of division-leading Kane County.

The series continues tomorrow at 5:30pm central time. The L-Kings send lefthander Michael Kirkman to the mound against South Bend righty Eduardo Baeza. Listen to the broadcast live on AM 1340 KROS in Clinton, or stream the broadcast over the internet at www.lumberkings.com.
