Lansing Lugnuts News Release

LANSING - The Lugnuts have shown an affinity for late inning dramatics so far this season and Wednesday night was no different. Lansing's Luke Hetherington smacked a two out, two run homer over the left field wall in the 13th inning to lift the Lugnuts to their fifth consecutive win, a 4-2 decision over the Cedar Rapids Kernels at Oldsmobile Park.

With two out and the bases empty in the 13th, Brian Pettway roped a double down the third base line. Hetherington then followed two pitches later by blasting his first home run of the season. The win improves Lansing to 15-5, the best start in the history of the Lugnuts.

The Lugnuts led 2-0 in the seventh inning when the Kernels fought back to tie the game. Patrick Reilly doubled to right field to lead off and was driven home on a Jordan Renz triple to right-center field that cut the lead to 2-1. Renz scored later on a Brett Martinez infield single to make the score 2-2.

Cedar Rapids loaded the bases in the eighth inning against Lansing reliever Po-Hsuan Keng, but the Kernels were unable to get a run across the plate.

The Lugnuts had several chances to end the game before the 13th, including a golden opportunity in the 10th inning. Sean Shoffit led off with a triple to left-center that Brad Coon lost in the lights, but the Lugnuts stranded him at third base.

A.J. Wideman had a quality start for Lansing after throwing 6 1/3 innings and allowing just two runs on six hits.

Joey McLaughlin notched his first win of the season while Tim Mattison took the loss for Cedar Rapids.

The Lugnuts and Kernels (10-10) will play game three of the four game series on Thursday night at Oldsmobile Park. It will be a Molson Thirsty Thursday with soda and beer on-sale for $2. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m.
