Dayton Dragons News Release

Dayton, OH - The Dayton Dragons (9-11) saw its season high four game winning come to a close but certainly not for lack of effort. The Peoria Chiefs (10-10) jumped out to a 5-0 lead before the Dragons battled back to within one at 5-4. The Chiefs hung on picking up single run in the seventh inning for insurance, picking up a 6-4 win in the second game of a four game series at Fifth Third Field in front of 8,773.

Dragons starter Jeff Stevens (LP, 1-1) was the victim of a pair of bloop singles in the top of the first inning as the Chiefs took a 3-0 lead. Robinson Chirinos led the game off with a flip shot to left, moved to second on a wild pitch and then stole third. With one down Jesus Valdes picked up a walk to put runners on the corners. Kevin Collins gave the Chiefs a 1-0 lead on an RBI single to right. Valdes moved to third on the play and would score on a ground out to first. With two outs, Alberto Garcia's bloop job to center scored the third run of the game plating Collins for a 3-0 lead.

The Chiefs added two more off Stevens in the fourth inning on the first home run of the season from Jake Muyco. The line drive homer that just cleared the wall in left scored Brandon Taylor who reached first on a two out single to center. Stevens was lifted after 4.0 innings of work on the night, the right hander allowed five runs on seven hits with one strike out, one walk and wild pitch.

Dayton began their come back in the bottom of the fourth off Chiefs starter Mitch Adkins (WP, 2-0). With two out and runners on first and second base, B.J. Szymanski crushed a Adkins offering off the wall in deep right center for his second triple of the season. The three base hit scored Jay Bruce and Habelito Hernandez and the Dragons were on the board at 5-2.

Single run scoring innings in the fifth and sixth got Dayton to within one run at 5-4. Mike Griffin picked up an RBI single to right in the fifth, scoring Craig Tatum, who reached on an error by Peoria centerfielder Matt Ciaramella. Hernandez picked up his fifth RBI of the season lifting a SAC fly to center in the sixth, driving home Paul Janish who reached on a walk and moved to third on an Adkins balk and a ground out.

The Chiefs plated an insurance run in the seventh off Bo Lanier (ND) on a two out single by Valdes that was re-directed off the pitcher's leg into shallow right field. Valdes' third hit of the night gave Peoria a two run cushion at 6-4.

Ed Campusano (SV, 5) pitched a one, two, three, ninth to save the win for Adkins who lasted 6.0 innings, scattering five hits with seven K's and a walk.

Game three of the four game series with the Peoria Chiefs takes place Thursday night at Fifth Third Field. Cincinnati Reds right hander Paul Wilson will make a rehab for the Dragons and is expected to throw 90 pitches for the Miami Valley's team.
