Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release
FORT WAYNE, IN -- Jose Escalona pitched five no-hit innings (with five walks, a hit batsman, and four strikeouts) and the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers scored five times in the top of the fifth inning for a 7-3 win over the Fort Wayne Wizards at Memorial Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. Bryan Sabatella had a pair of hits, including a two-run single in the fifth inning to help lead the offense.
Wisconsin (9-11) broke up the scoreless game with a five run outburst that started with two outs and nobody on base. Ron Garth drew a walk and JB Tucker singled. On a 3-2 pitch Mike Saunders singled to drive in Garth and move Tucker to third. After Chao Kuan Wu drew a walk to load the bases, the Wizards brought in reliever Joel Santo. Eddy Hernandez drew another walk to force in the second run of the inning.
A wild pitch by Santo allowed the Rattlers to score again. Then, Sabatella singled to right chasing home two more runs and Wisconsin had a 5-0 lead.
Escalona struggled to get through the fifth inning. He walked Daryl Jones, the lead off batter, but got the next two batters. After getting ahead of Abraham Aguilar 0-2, Escalona hit the number nine hitter in the order to keep the inning alive. The Rattler lefty walked Mike Sansoe to load the bases and Josh Alley to force in a run. Then, Escalona struck out Seth Johnston to end the inning. That was the end of the day for Escalona as he reached his pitch limit.
Fort Wayne (11-8) got their first hit of the game in the top of the sixth. Nic Crosta singled off Jeff Gilmore to start the inning, but was left stranded. Gilmore got into trouble in the seventh and a two-out, two-run triple by Crosta got Fort Wayne to within 5-3. Joe Woerman relieved Gilmore and got the final out of the seventh and tossed a perfect eighth.
Wisconsin added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the ninth. Garth, who had been 0-for-2 in the game, extended his hitting streak to ten games with an RBI single. Later in the inning, Tucker drove in the other run with a sacrifice fly.
Edgar Guaramato worked a scoreless ninth inning and the Rattlers picked up the win.
The Rattlers and Wizards meet again on Thursday night. Wisconsin sends Jason Snyder (1-1, 3.66) to the mound. Fort Wayne has Ben Krosschell (1-2, 7.11) scheduled to make the start. Game time at Memorial Stadium is 5:00pm CDT.
