Quad Cities falters late

April 26, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

The Swing of the Quad Cities were bitten by their defense again Wednesday night at John O'Donnell Stadium, falling to the Beloit Snappers, 7-3. Beloit did not take their first lead until the eighth inning, when a series of errors and unearned runs spoiled a fine pitching performance by Swing starter Jaime Garcia.

Quad Cities (9-11) has committed nine errors through the first two games of this series, causing six of Beloit's 13 runs to be unearned. The Swing have been charged with 45 miscues on the season.

Quad Cities was leading 3-2 in the top of eighth when Paul Kelly's leadoff bouncer to short was misplayed by Daniel Nelson. After a single and a wild pitch, Eli Tintor slapped a two-out, two-run double to right field that gave Beloit a 4-3 lead.

Things unraveled further in the ninth. Another leadoff bouncer to short was bobbled by Nelson, his third error of the game. With men on first and second, Steve Tolleson laid a perfect bunt down the third base line. Randy Roth charged in and barehanded the ball, but his errant throw to first sailed past Jose Martinez covering, allowing both baserunners to come home and Tolleson to end up at third. One pitch later Kelly's single gave the Snappers a 7-3 advantage.

Quad Cities reached the scoreboard first in the bottom of the third, when Colby Rasmus extended his hit-streak to eight games with a leadoff single. After a one-out walk to Bryan Anderson, Matt Wilkerson's single through the right side of the infield plated Rasmus. Later in the inning, with two outs, Wilkerson was hung up in a rundown after a pickoff throw to first, but Anderson used the diversion to sprint home and give the Swing a 2-0 lead.

In the fifth, Roth added to the lead with a solo home run to left. The third baseman leads the Midwest League with seven home runs, but this was his first longball at John O'Donnell Stadium.

Overshadowed by the Snappers' comeback was a solid outing from Garcia, who did not figure into the decision. After allowing two singles in the first, the 19-year-old southpaw did not allow another hit until the sixth, and was pitching a shutout through five innings. Garcia, a native of Reynosa, Mexico, allowed his only two runs in the sixth, going six total innings while allowing four hits and a walk with six strikeouts.

Jason Cairns (1-1) was saddled with the loss, allowing five runs - two earned - on four hits in one inning. The righty struck out one and walked one, tossing the eighth and facing four batters in the ninth without recording an out.

Jose Lugo (1-1) was the winner with three strong innings of relief for Beloit, allowing only the Roth home run while fanning four. Danny Powers (2) struck out a pair in picking up the save despite allowing three hits in two innings.

UP NEXT: The Swing will continue their series with the Beloit Snappers Thursday night, sending RHP Mark McCormick (1-1, 4.61) to the mound against RHP Kyle Waldrop (1-2, 4.91). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30, and pre-game coverage on WKBF AM-1270 will begin at 6:15.
