Five game winning streak ends
April 26, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK - For the second game in a row, the Whitecaps led Kane County, 2-1 going to the ninth inning. Also for the second day in a row, the Cougars scored to tie the game in the ninth. But on Wednesday, Kane County added two more runs to take a 4-2 lead on the way to a 4-3 victory over West Michigan.
The result ends a five game winning streak for the Whitecaps and halts a four game losing streak for the Cougars.
Ricky Steik allowed three straight hits to start the ninth inning, including a game-tying single by Steve Kleen and a go-ahead two-run home run by Jeff Baisley. Steik then struck out the next three batters in a row.
It was the second consecutive blown save for the Whitecaps, who had converted their first eight save opportunities of the season.
West Michigan mounted a comeback effort in the bottom of the ninth. Jeramy Laster came through with a two-out RBI single to right, which cut the lead in half. Laster also picked up an RBI in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly to center.
The game began as a pitcher's duel. Neither team had a hit until Ryan Roberson singled in the bottom of the fourth.
Sendy Vasquez retired the first 13 Kane County batters of the game. He allowed a run in the fifth inning on a single by Jeff Bieker. The run ended a streak of 20.2 shutout innings pitched to begin the year for Vasquez.
Wednesday marked the first time this season that Vasquez has pitched and the Whitecaps have allowed a run.
Andrew Kown threw two scoreless innings of relief for West Michigan, which stretches season-opening streak of shutout innings to 14.
Matt Joyce had the first Whitecaps RBI of the night on a bases loaded walk in the fourth.
