Kane County Cougars News Release

Grand Rapids, MI - Kane County Cougars third baseman Jeff Baisley blasted a monstrous, two-run home run in the top of the ninth inning Wednesday night against the West Michigan Whitecaps, breaking a 2-2, sending the Cougars to a 4-3 win and snapping the team's four-game losing streak. Kane County's pitching trio of Jason Ray, Brad Davis and Dan Fyvie combined for 13 strikeouts in the win.

The Cougars, who have now compiled two ninth-inning comebacks in as many days, started their rally when Frank Martinez doubled off Whitecaps reliever Ricky Steik and went to third on a wild pitch. Steve Kleen lined a single to even the score 2-2, and Baisley crushed a two-run shot well beyond the left-field fence for his fifth round-tripper of the year and a 4-2 Cougars lead. Dan Fyvie allowed one ninth-inning tally before notching his third save.

The game featured an early duel between Cougars starter Jason Ray and West Michigan's Sendy Vasquez. Ray gave up both of his runs in the bottom of the fourth but rebounded to last a season-best six innings. He allowed just three hits, walked four and struck out eight, also a season-high total. Meanwhile Vasquez held the Cougars hitless until the fifth. Jose Pineda doubled and later scored on a two-out single by Jeff Bieker that made it 2-1.

Kane County lefty Brad Davis (2-0) got the win after two perfect relief innings and now has logged 18 innings this season and without allowing a run of any kind. Steik (0-1) suffered the loss for the Whitecaps.

The Cougars (12-8), still in sole possession of first place in the Western Division, send Trey Shields (2-2, 3.91) to the mound Thursday night at 5:35 CDT in game three. West Michigan (12-7) will counter with Burke Badenhop (1-0, 6.23).
