Sacramento River Cats News Release
Tucson, Ariz. - A two-out, two-strike, two-run single by Adam Rosales in the ninth inning was the difference Wednesday night at Kino Stadium, as the River Cats topped Tucson, 3-2, to win their fifth-straight game and guarantee a series victory over the T-Pads.
Tucson jumped ahead for the second-straight night, this time taking a 2-0 lead into the seventh inning. The River Cats scored a single run in the seventh-also on a Rosales RBI base hit-before taking the lead for the first time in the final frame.
In the ninth, Michael Taylor led off with a double-his third two-bagger of the game-before Wes Timmons reached base on a hit by pitch. That set the stage for Rosales, who fell behind 1-2 against Padres closer Bradley Boxberger before lining a base hit to right, driving in the eventual game-winning runs.
Boxberger (0-1) suffered the defeat for Tucson, allowing both runs in the ninth on a pair of base hits.
A's top prospect Jarrod Parker started and tossed the first six innings for Sacramento, but did not figure in the decision. Parker struck out six and walked one while holding the T-Pads to just one earned run. Erick Threets (1-0) picked up the win, and Jim Miller earned the save with a perfect ninth.
Rosales (two-for-four, three RBIs) and Taylor (three-for-four, three doubles) were the stars offensively for the Cats, while Derek Norris chipped in with a single and a double.
The River Cats head into Thursday's matchup with a chance to sweep Tucson and finish the season-opening road trip with a 7-1 record. They will send RHP Tyson Ross (0-0, 2.25 ERA) to the mound against Tucson RHP Josh Geer (0-1, 6.75 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. from Kino Stadium.
The River Cats open the 2012 home slate on April 13 at 7:05 p.m. against the Reno Aces, in a rematch of the 2011 PCL Pacific Conference championship series.
