Rodriguez escapes jam, lifts Cats to victory

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Henry Rodriguez struck out the side with the bases loaded to preserve a one-run lead in Sacramento's 4-3 victory over New Orleans on Sunday night at Raley Field. The hard-throwing right-hander followed his eighth-inning Houdini act by striking out two in the ninth inning, giving him five strikeouts in his six batters faced. He recorded his third save of the season in the process.

River Cats lead-off hitter Eric Patterson opened the scoring with a two-run double to right-center in the second inning. Two batters later, he stole third base to tie the River Cats' single-season record of 39 steals in a season, set by Bo Porter in 2000. Justin Duchscherer, on a rehab start for the Oakland A's, allowed two hits and no runs in 4.0 innings. He threw 55 pitches, 42 of which were strikes.

With Fresno's loss to Oklahoma City, the River Cats are now 8.5 games ahead of the second-place Grizzlies in the Pacific Coast League South Division standings. Sacramento's magic number to clinch the division is 21.
