TONIGHT: The RedHawks continue their semi-annual California trip with the first of a 4-game series against the Fresno Grizzlies (San Francisco Giants) at Chukchansi Park. OKC dropped 3 of 4 in Sacramento and enter this series have lost 4 of 5 and 8 of 10. They've dropped 6 games back of Albuquerque in the American South, their farthest point back of first all season. Righthander Guillermo Moscoso gets the start for the RedHawks. Fresno starts right-handed veteran Ramon Ortiz. The Grizzlies are second in the Pacific South, 7.5 games back of Sacramento. Fresno is tied with Albuquerque for the second-best win percentage in the PCL at .548 and would lead both the American North and Pacific North divisions.
STARTING AT SECOND: Sacramento won last night's series finale at Raley Field 11-4 to take 3 of 4 from the RedHawks. The River Cats had a runner at second base with nobody out in each of the first 5 innings and went 5-for-19 with runners in scoring position as they scored at least one run in 5 of 8 innings. Brandon McCarthy (0-1) made his first rehab start and first outing since a Ranger start June 4 on the way back from a stress fracture in his right shoulder blade. McCarthy went 1 inning (plus two batters in the second) and was charged with 5 runs on 4 hits in the loss. McCarthy faced 9 batters and 6 reached (4 hits, 1 walk, 1 hit batsman).
DIVISION UPDATE: OKC has dropped a season-low 6 games back of Albuquerque in the American South and is under .500 for the first time since July 19. The RedHawks have lost 4.5 games in the standings since opening a 4-game series at Albuquerque July 28.
K-METER: The RedHawks struck out 42 times in the 4 games at Sacramento, which climbed into second in the league in pitching strikeouts. OKC fanned 10 times last night, including 4 with the bases loaded.
STREAKING: Royce Huffman owns the RedHawks' best current hitting streak (7 games), during which he's 11-for-29 (.379) with 1 homer and 2 RBIs. Huffman has hit safely in 16 of his last 17 games. He has more doubles (24) than any other RedHawk has extra-base hits. Joaquin Arias has a 6-game hitting streak, going 11-for-25 (.440) with 2 homers and 6 RBIs.
BIG SCORES: With last night's 11-4 final score, the winning margin has been 4 runs or more in 8 of the last 12 RedHawks games. OKC is 28-20 in games decided by 2 runs or fewer and 28-37 when the final margin is 3 runs or more. The RedHawks are third in the league lead in one-run wins with a 20-12 mark. Sacramento is 21-11 in that category, while Memphis is 22-18. Friday's 4-3 loss was OKC's first one-run game since a 7-6 win at New Orleans July 23 in 12 innings.
TRANSACTION RECAP: On Friday, Texas recalled outfielder Julio Borbon from OKC and assigned outfielder Dustin Majewski to the RedHawks from Double-A Frisco. Esteban German was purchased by Texas on Wednesday when Joaquin Arias was optioned. On this trip, OKC has sent its top two hitters by batting average, German and Borbon, to the big leagues. German remains 10th in the PCL with a .322 average, while Borbon is fifth in hits with 125.
NEW NAME FOR THE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME: The Bricktown Showdown, which the PCL champion has won all three years its been played, is now the Triple-A Baseball National Championship Game. The annual meeting of the playoff champions from the International and Pacific Coast Leagues takes place at Oklahoma City's AT&T Bricktown Ballpark Sept. 22 at 6 pm CDT and will be broadcast live again this season on ESPN2 and Westwood One radio.
