Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK - The Express (50-66) bounced back from a four-game sweep at the hands of Tacoma with a series opening, 6-4 win against Portland (50-66) Sunday night at Dell Diamond.
Lou Santangelo led Round Rock at the plate with two hits and a run scored.
Birthday boy and Express starter Erick Abreu got the win, but had to work out of some trouble early in the game.
Abreu allowed four runs on five hits with four strikeouts in six innings of work, earning his second win of the season for Round Rock.
Chad Paronto earned his 17th save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning.
Portland jumped on Abreu in the top of the first inning when Mike Baxter tripled with one out, and Chad Huffman followed with a home run onto the left field berm to make it 2-0.
Round Rock responded with a two-run inning of its own in the bottom of the first. With one out, Edwin Maysonet walked, Brian Bogusevic was hit by a pitch and Mark Saccomanno walked, and Portland starter Aaron Poreda put himself in a tough spot. A wild pitch later, and Maysonet scored while the other runners moved up to second and third. Tommy Manzella was then walked to load the bases and set up the double play, but Chris Johnson brought Bogusevic home with a sacrifice fly to tie the game before Poreda got out of the inning.
Round Rock added another run in the third inning when Manzella reached on a swinging bunt single, then moved up on a throwing error by Poreda on a pickoff attempt. Johnson was then walked, but Yordany Ramirez came through with a bloop single to left field to score Manzella.
The Express gave itself some breathing room in the fourth inning when Abreu helped his own cause with a double to left field, and Reggie Abercrombie followed with a single to put runners at first and third with no outs. Maysonet walked, Bogusevic flew out and Saccomanno singled to shallow right field to score both Abreu and Abercrombie to make it 5-2, Round Rock.
It became a four-run lead in the fifth inning when Santangelo led off the frame with a single to right-center field, Abreu moved him to second with a bunt, Abercrombie walked and Bogusevic singled to right-center field after a Maysonet fly out. Santangelo dashed in from second to make it 6-2, Round Rock.
Portland kept things interesting in the sixth inning when Nick Hundley hit a two-run home run to left field to make it 6-4, giving the Beavers three innings to work with.
Poreda struggled in his second start for Portland since being the top prospect sent the Padres in exchange for ace Jake Peavy at the trade deadline, allowing five runs on six hits with five walks in 3 1/3 innings pitched. The big left-hander threw 80 pitches over that span, only 42 of which were strikes.
The two teams meet again on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. at Dell Diamond with right-hander Felipe Paulino scheduled take the mound for Round Rock against Portland right-hander Josh Geer.
