Late Rally Falls Short for Sox, Fall to Redbirds 7-6

The Colorado Springs Sky Sox scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning but fell a run short in their comeback as they fell to the Memphis Redbirds 7-6 on Sunday evening at Security Service Field in front of 5,088 fans.

In the bottom of the ninth, the first three batters to face Memphis reliever Pete Parise reached base and scored. Kenny Perez doubled to lead off the inning and scored on an RBI single by Paul Phillips. Phillips came around to score on the next play as Eric Young Jr. singled and centerfielder Shane Robinson threw the ball into the left field stands to send Phillips home and Young Jr. to third. Mike McCoy plated Young Jr. with a sac fly but the Sox would do no more damage. Parise retired Jonathan Herrera on a strike out and Royce Ring came on to induce a fly ball out from pinch hitter Paul McAnulty to end the game.

Before the last inning heroics, Memphis had been in control for most of the game. After the Redbirds got out to an early 2-0 lead, the Sox tied it up at two all in the third on a two-run single by Dan Ortmeier but Memphis pulled away from there. They plated lone tallies in the fourth and fifth, put two up in the seventh, and another single run in the eighth to take a 7-3 lead before the Sox rally.

Adam Ottavino (5-10) picked up the win after working five innings and giving up three runs on five hits and Alan Johnson (8-6) took the loss after surrendering four runs on ten hits. Ring got the final out to record his third save of the season.

Game two is set for 7:05 PM tomorrow night with LH Damian Moss (6-3, 3.26) take the hill for the Sox versus P.J. Walters (6-7, 4.24).

GAME NOTES: Eric Young Jr. scored his 106th run of the season tying him with Phil Hiatt for the most runs scored by a member of the Sky Sox in a single season.
