New Britain Rock Cats News Release

NEW BRITAIN, CT - Current Minnesota Twins stars - and former New Britain Rock Cats - Joe Mauer, Justin Morneau, and Francisco Liriano, were all invited to participate in Major League Baseball's XM All-Star Futures Game, a USA vs. World matchup held annually on the same field as the big league All-Star clash. And that pipeline of standout performers from New Britain continues, as today it was announced that Rene Tosoni, a talented 22-year-old Outfielder with the 2009 Rock Cats, has been picked to play for the World Team.

The Canadian-born Tosoni has been impressive in all phases in his first season with the Twins' Double-A affiliate in New Britain. In 67 games thus far in 2009 - appearing primarily in right field but occasionally taking to center - Tosoni has been the Rock Cats' top run producer, while showcasing one of the Eastern League's most feared throwing arms. The 6'0"/190-pound Tosoni currently leads New Britain with 9 Home Runs and 45 RBI, both club-highs; his 7 Assists from the outfield also pace the Hardware City team. After a sluggish start in his Eastern League debut, Tosoni rebounded in May, hitting .323 with 6 Doubles, 5 Home Runs and 20 RBI. His BA is currently .262 - and rising.

A native of Toronto, Ontario and a 36th Round pick by Minnesota in 2005, Tosoni joins 2006 American League MVP Justin Morneau as a member of the World squad from north of the border. Since 1999, nine other New Britain players have made the trip to the venue of the Midsummer Classic.

The XM All-Star Futures Game will be held on July 12 at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, and can be seen as part of ESPN's coverage of the Major League Baseball All-Star Weekend festivities leading up to Sunday's AL-NL tilt.
