Diaz Wins It in the 12th Inning Outlast Fisher Cats 5-4

(Manchester, NH) - SS Argenis Diaz (1-for-5, RBI) belted a run-scoring double down the right-field line in the top of the 12th inning to give the Portland Sea Dogs (34-38) a 5-4 win over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (32-42) on Friday night in the series opener at Merchantsauto.com Stadium. The Sea Dogs snapped a 2-game losing streak and improved to 5-2 against New Hampshire this season.

Pinch-hitter Reid Engel (for RF Matt Sheely) tied the game at four in the 9th inning with a lead-off, pinch-hit homer off RHP Adrian Martin, igniting the extra-inning battle. The last pinch-hit homer for the Portland franchise came on June 28, 2004 by Jeff Bailey against the Norwich Navigators.

RHP T.J. Large (3-0) worked two scoreless frames, including a perfect 12th to earn his 3rd win of the season. RHP Bryce Cox fired two flawless innings over innings 9 & 10 on two hits, two walks and two strikeouts. Cox stranded four runners over two innings and lowered his ERA to 2.81.

RHP Danny Farquhar (1-3) allowed four hits and one run to take the loss for New Hampshire. Portland started to the rally in the 12th on LF Ryan Kalish's (1-for-6) infield single. Kalish ended a 0-for-17 slump and was running on Diaz's double to right. 2B Ryan Khoury went 2-for-3 but reached base six times with 2 hits, 3 walks and a hit-by-pitch.

The Sea Dogs led 2-1 entering the bottom of the 6th inning but New Hampshire scored three times off RHP Chris Province. C Brian Jeroloman (2-for-4, 2 RBI, 2B, BB) snapped a 2-2 game in the sixth inning with a 2-out single to center field. The Fisher Cats scored the tying run on a passed by C Mark Wagner. Jeroloman snapped a 3-3 tie in the eighth inning with a 2-out double down the right-field line, scoring RF Adam Calderone (1-for-5, BB).

C Jon Still (1-for-6, HR, RBI) blasted his second homer of the roadtrip to give Portland a 2-1 lead in the fourth. Still homered off starter LHP Luis Perez, who lasted 6.1 innings for the Fisher Cats, yielding three hits, three runs (two earned), five walks and eight strikeouts. 3B Jorge Jimenez drove in two runs and finished 2-for-6 for Portland. Jimenez sent a 0-2 fastball up the middle for a run-scoring in the first inning to give Portland a 1-0 lead. In the seventh inning, Jimenez tied the game with a single off Martin.

RHP Ryne Lawson (2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, BB, SO) left the game after two innings for Portland, surrendering a first inning run on DH Nick Gorneault's (1-for-4, RBI, BB) infield-RBI single off the third base bag. LHP Andrew Dobies hurled three scoreless frames and Province yielded 5 hits and 3 runs over 3 IP.

The Sea Dogs finished 2-for-18 with runners-in-scoring position and stranded 15 runners. New Hampshire left 10 and dropped to 15-23 at home.
