Toledo Mud Hens News Release
The Mud Hens hosted the Rochester Red Wings Tuesday evening in the second game of their short three game series at Fifth Third Field. The hot and humid Toledo night played host to an intriguing pitching matchup for two very different reasons. On the Toledo side, toeing the slab was Warwick Saupold who was called up early Tuesday morning from Erie (AA) to make the start. Saupold's call up proceeded multiple shake-ups to the Hens' starting rotation as Buck Farmer was promoted to Detroit and Kyle Ryan was optioned back to Toledo on Monday. On the Rochester side, it was Jose Berrios taking the hill in just his fifth Triple-A start. Berrios was tabbed as the Minnesota Twins 4th ranked prospect after the 2014 season.
Through the first five innings of the ballgame, the two starters did not disappoint, going back and fourth, putting up goose eggs and silencing the two offenses. However, in the top of the sixth the Red Wings' bats broke through off Saupold plating three runs. The scoring came thanks to back to back extra base hits from Reynaldo Rodriguez and Danny Ortiz as the three runs forced Saupold out of the game in the sixth. Saupold finished having thrown 5.2 innings, surrendering four runs on seven hits with two strikeouts.
In the bottom half of the sixth, the Toledo offense showed a little fight of their own as Marc Krauss led off the frame with a double down the right field line. Trayvon Robinson followed the extra base hit with one of his own, plating Krauss and cutting the Red Wings' lead to 4-1. Although the Hens showed a glimpse of fight, the game would get out of hand in the seventh as the Red Wings plated four more, highlighted by another RBI extra base hit from Danny Ortiz. The Hens sent their final run across the plate in the top of the ninth as Marc Krauss scored on a Manny Pina RBI groundout.
On a side note, the Toledo fans were treated to the Mud Hens debut of a local product as Marc Krauss sported the navy pinstripes for the first time Tuesday evening. Krauss was optioned to Toledo from Detroit on 7/26 after hitting .152 with one home run and two RBI in his tweleve games with the Tigers. Krauss is a graduate of nearby Patrick Henry High School, and resides in Deshler, Ohio.
The Mud Hens and Red Wings wrap things up on Wednesday, first pitch set for 12:00 pm.
