Rochester Red Wings News Release
The Rochester Red Wings used a four-run sixth inning to break open a scoreless tie, backing another strong mound performance from Jose Berrios in a 13-2 win over the Toledo Mud Hens Tuesday night in Toledo. Danny Ortiz and Reynaldo Rodriguez each drove in three runs to help the Red Wings break a four-game losing streak. The Wings remain 2 1/2 games behind first place Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, who also won Tuesday.
The game featured a rookie mound match-up, with Wings right-hander Berrios making his fifth Triple-A start. The Mud Hens had Warwick Saupold on the mound, just called up from Double-A Erie to make his Triple-A debut.
Berrios was coming off his best start with the Wings, a win July 23 against Gwinnett in which he allowed no runs and four hits in 7+ innings. Berrios struck out the first batter he faced Tuesday, then put a pair of runners on base. But Berrios struck out dangerous veteran slugger Mike Hessman, and a groundout ended the Toledo scoring threat.
Through three innings, the Wings had picked up three hits but were unable to score off Saupold. Berrios allowed just one hit over three innings, racking up five strikeouts.
The Hens put runners at the corners with two out in the fourth inning, with Berrios running his strikeout total to seven. Berrios picked Trayvon Robinson off first base for the final out of the inning to escape the jam.
Manny Pina doubled off Berrios in the bottom of the fourth inning, and Pina made it to third base after a sacrifice fly for the second out. Berrios walked Corey Jones to once again give Toledo runners at the corners, then got a groundball out to end the inning and keep the game scoreless through five innings.
In the sixth inning, Saupold walked James Beresford and Oswaldo Arcia with two outs - the first walks of the game by Saupold. Rodriguez pounded a 1-0 pitch to the gap in right-center, with Rodriguez hustling to third with a two-RBI triple. It was the fifth triple of the season for Rodriguez. Ortiz followed with a double to bring home Rodriguez, giving the Wings a 3-0 lead and knocking Saupold out of the game. Argenis Diaz notched his third hit of the game, an RBI single that scored Ortiz and pushed the Wings' lead to 4-0.
Saupold (0-1) worked 5 2/3 innings, allowing seven hits and four earned runs with two walks. He struck out three and threw 85 pitches, 52 for strikes.
The Mud Hens used a two-out rally of their own to break up the shutout bid by Berrios. Back-to-back doubles from Marc Krauss and Robinson made it a 4-1 game, with Berrios getting a flyball out to end the inning.
Rodriguez brought in another run in the top of the seventh inning, reaching on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded for a 5-1 Rochester lead. A two-run double from Ortiz and an RBI single by Eric Farris added three more runs to the lead.
Berrios (2-0) worked six innings, allowing five hits, one earned run and a walk, while striking out eight. Berrios threw 100 pitches, 61 for strikes. Michael Tonkin pitched the seventh and eighth innings, retiring all six batters he faced.
Carlos Paulino tripled in the eighth inning, bringing home Doug Bernier for a 9-1 Wings lead. Xavier Avery's sacrifice fly plated Paulino to make it 10-1.
Nate Hanson's pinch-hit double in the ninth brought in Ortiz to make it an 11-1 game, and Bernier's second home run of the season finished the scoring and ran the Wings' lead to 13-1.
A.J. Achter pitched the ninth inning for the Wings, allowing one hit and one run.
The Red Wings out-hit the Mud Hens 18-6. The 18 hits tied the season team-high, matched May 5 in Indianapolis.
Beresford had three hits and a walk, extending his hitting streak to eight games. Diaz had three hits and a run batted in against his former team, and Ortiz and Paulino each had three hits.
Next up: RHP Michael Bowden (7-2, 1.91 ERA with Norfolk) makes his Red Wings debut against LHP Mike Belfiore (4-9, 5.45).
