Syracuse, NY (7/28/2015) - The Syracuse Chiefs fell to the Buffalo Bisons, 6-0, on Tuesday night. Bisons starter Jeff Francis pitched seven shutout innings, striking out four and surrendering only 5 hits and no walks.
Buffalo (54-50) struck first, putting up three runs in the top of the second inning. Alex Hassan, the designated hitter, led off the inning with a double. After a strikeout, Ty Kelly walked. With one out, second baseman Jon Berti lined a triple past the diving Tony Gwynn, Jr., in left field, scoring two runs. Following a Josh Thole walk, shortstop Munenori Kawasaki singled to left, scoring Berti and giving the Bisons and early 3-0 lead.
The Bisons added another run to their lead in the top of the fourth. Continuing his hot hitting, Berti smashed a solo home run to left field to lead off the inning. Buffalo led 4-0 after four innings.
Keeping their theme of scoring every other inning, the Bisons scored again in the top of the sixth. Chiefs starter Taylor Hill walked the first two batters of the inning. Kawasaki then laid down a sacrifice bunt, pushing the runners to second and third with one out. Left fielder Dalton Pompey then hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Berti from third. In the next at-bat, third baseman Andy Burns doubled to right field, pushing Josh Thole across from second and giving the Bisons a 6-0 lead.
Syracuse (41-64) reliever Blake Treinen was lights out in his third appearance this season. In two and one-third innings, Treinen struck out four while only allowing two hits.
The Chiefs and Bisons play game three of a four-game set Wednesday evening with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Stephen Strasburg will take the mound for Syracuse in a major-league rehab start. Strasburg will oppose right-hander Scott Copeland.
