Buffalo Bisons News Release

In the two games prior to Tuesday night's matchup, the Bisons persisted throughout the entirety of the game, only to come out with a win and a loss. On Tuesday, an early 3-0 lead, combined with a stellar pitching performance, was enough to sustain a lead from beginning to end.

The Bisons rebounded from a tough loss the night before to defeat the Chiefs, 6-0, in one of their most complete all-around games of the season on Tuesday night in the second of a four-game series. Buffalo's last shut out was last week, against Pawtucket, accumulating the same score.

Jeff Francis hurled a terrific game for the Herd, going seven innings and only giving up five hits while shutting down the Syracuse offense. Francis started his first game since July 2 due to his participation in the Pan-American games, but did not show any signs of slowing down. He picked up his third consecutive victory in as many starts and now has fifth on the season.

After Francis exited the game, he handed the ball off to the bullpen - and as usual, the unit was lights out. It was only two innings of work, but Steve Delabar and Chad Jenkins both threw one inning of hitless ball to preserve the shutout.

But as effective as Francis' off-speed and fastball was on Tuesday, the offense was just as potent. Buffalo put up six runs, half of which came in the third inning off the bat of Jon Berti. The second baseman sent a deep ball to left field, clearing the bases in the process to take an early 3-0 lead.

But the youngster wasn't done yet. Berti added an insurance run in the fourth inning with his first home run with the Herd. Berti had one of his finest games in his young Bisons career, going 2-for-3 with four RBI and three runs.

Berti was one of four players to record two or more hits, with Munenori Kawasaki leading the way with three hits of his own. Alex Hassan and Andy Burns were the other players who accomplished the feat.

MVP candidate Matt Hague picked up a single in the fifth inning after going hitless on Monday night. Hague has yet to go hitless in consecutive games this season. He still holds a commanding lead in the IL batting race with a .347 average.

Buffalo will continue its four-game series with Syracuse on Wednesday. The game will begin at 7:05 p.m.

Bisons Notes: Dalton Pompey went 0-for-4, snapping his IL-leading 12-game hitting streak ... The Herd has now recorded at least 11 hits in four straight games and has averaged seven runs per game in that span
