Rochester Red Wings News Release
MONDAY, JULY 30, 2012 w HUNTINGTON PARK
GAME #110 - ROAD GAME #56 - 7:05 P.M.
ROCHESTER RED WINGS (53-56) at COLUMBUS CLIPPERS (59-51)
RHP ESMERLING VASQUEZ (4-5, 3.68) vs. LHP T.J. McFARLAND (4-4, 5.25)
ON THE HUNT: The Rochester Red Wings tonight play the 3rd game of their 4-game series at Columbus (Indians), continuing an 8-game roadtrip that also includes a 4-game set at Toledo (Tigers) after Wednesday's offday. The Red Wings yesterday defeated the Clippers 8-5, an inverse score of the series-opening loss. Rochester returns to Frontier Field one week from today for a 6-game stay, the start of a stretch of playing 18 of its final 29 games at home.
a The Red Wings are in the midst of playing 16 of 20 games on the road, a stretch that started July 16.
a Meanwhile, back at Frontier Field, Red Sox righthander Daisuke Matsuzaka tonight makes a rehab start for Triple-A Pawtucket against the Empire State Yankees.
WE MADE IT: The Red Wings last night picked up their 53rd victory to match their win total from all of last year. A win tonight, obviously, would eclipse that total. The 2011 club went 53-91 and it was 23 games under .500 at 43-66 at this point last season. The 2010 team was 31 games below .500 at 39-70 at this juncture and went on to finish only 49-95.
a Rochester is off to its best 109-game start since the 2007 squad was 58-51.
CAN'T LIE ABOUT JULY: The Red Wings are 16-11 in July, the 2nd-best record in the International League in that time, 2.0 games behind Columbus. The list of the Top 5:
Rank Team Record
1. A0 18-9
2. 16-11
3. Indianapolis (Pirates) 16-12
4. Empire State 13-11
T5. Charlotte (White Sox) 14-12
Norfolk (Oroiles) 14-12
Pawtucket (Red Sox) 14-12
a The Red Wings yesterday snapped a 3-game losing streak and won for just the 2nd time in their last 8 games.
a With a 16-11 record and 2 games remaining in July, the Red Wings have guaranteed themselves their 2nd straight winning calendar month. The Wings went 15-14 in June and will post back-to-back winning calendar months for the first time since June and July 2007, when they went 16-15 and 18-13, respectively.
a The 16 wins this month are the club's most in a calendar month since August 2009, when they went 17-15.
QUITE THE TURNAROUND: The Red Wings are 33-26 since sitting a season-worst 10 games below .500 at 20-30 on May 28. Going back further, Rochester is 39-33 beginning May 15. The Wings are also 44-40 beginning May 3, playing better than .500 baseball for more than half the season.
ROAD WOES: The Red Wings are just 17-30 in true road games, a record that does not include 8 contests as the "road" team against the Empire State Yankees at Frontier Field. (Empire State is playing 38 of its "home" games at Frontier Field while PNC Field in Moosic, Pennsylvania undergoes a season-long renovation.) Rochester has won just 2 road series all year, winning 3 of 4 games at Louisville (Reds) June 14-17 and at Norfolk July 16-19.
QUITE A PRIME NUMBER: Righthander Shairon Martis yesterday became the 23rd different pitcher to record a win for the Red Wings. The 2011 club had only 19 different winners. The 23 winners are the Red Wings' most since at least 2003 (more research needed).
a Liam Hendriks leads the team with 7 wins, matching Andrew Baldwin's and Eric Hacker's team high from 2011. One more victory by Hendriks would give him the most in one season by a Red Wings pitcher since 2008, when Philip Humber and Francisco Liriano both logged 10.
NO ONE LEFT BEHIND: The Red Wings last night began a stretch of facing a left-handed starting pitcher in 5 of 6 games through Saturday at Toledo. Including last night at Columbus, Rochester has won 6 games in a row with an opposing left-handed starter. The Wings last lost a contest with southpaw on the hill on June 30, when they fell 6-4 to Empire State and its lefty starter Mike O'Connor.
THE BLISS OF CHRIS: Chris Parmelee is hitting .333 (20-for-60) with 3 homers, 13 RBI, 11 walks, and a .437 on-base percentage in 15 games since the All-Star Break. He has hit safely in a season-high 9 straight games, going 14-for-37 (.378). He also has hit safely in 13 of his last 14 games, batting .357 (20-for-56).
a Parmelee is one of 7 homegrown Twins players on the active roster, joining Evan Bigley, Brian Dinkelman, Liam Hendriks, Danny Lehmann, Bobby Lanigan, and Kyle Waldrop. It must be noted that Carlos Gutierrez and Anthony Slama are also homegrown Twins products, but they are both on the 7-Day Disabled List.
THIS DATE IN TWINS HISTORY: In 2001, the 60-45 Twins acquire All-Star righthander Rick Reed from the New York Mets in exchange for outfielder Matt Lawton...Reed went 4-6 with a 5.19 ERA in 12 starts down the stretch for the Twins, who finished 85-77 and failed to make the playoffs due to the division-winning Cleveland Indians and the 102-win Wild Card-winning Oakland A's.
