Maine Leads Yankees to 2-1 Victory over PawSox
July 30, 2012 - International League (IL1)
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees News Release
Rochester, NY - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees trailed the Pawtucket Red Sox by just 0.5 games heading into Monday night's series opener. John Maine was as good as he's ever been leading the Yankees past the PawSox and back into the International League North's top slot with a 2-1 win.
Kosuke Fukudome proved to be the difference maker in the ball game with an RBI single to left field in the home half of the sixth off of former Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankee and Red Baron Nelson Figueroa. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre added a huge insurance run in the bottom half of the ninth when Eduardo Nunez scored from third on a long fly ball to right field. Prior to scoring Nunez roped a single to left field, stole second and then advanced to third when Ryan Lavarnway's throw went sailing into centerfield.
The PawSox picked up a run in the bottom of the ninth on a fielders choice off the bat of Ryan Kalish to bring the Red Sox within 2-1. However, the rally was too little too late as Jose Iglesias grounded into a double play ending the game.
Daisuke Matsuzaka tossed 2.1 innings of shutout baseball in a rehab appearance with the PawSox. He allowed just four hits, while striking out three and walking one in the outing.
Maine got the win improving to 5-3 on the season after tossing seven shutout innings and allowing just one hit, while walking one and striking out two. Ryota Igarashi picked up his sixth save of the season with a scoreless ninth. Figueroa fell to 1-1 with the Red Sox as he allowed the Fukudome single in the sixth. He allowed one run on three hits, while walking one and striking out one. Cory Wade tossed a scoreless eighth in relief of Maine.
The PawSox and Yankees continue a short two game series at Frontier Field in Rochester, New York tomorrow evening at 7:00 PM. Ramon Ortiz (9-3, 3.10) gets the nod for the Yankees, while fellow right-hander Zach Stewart gets the ball for Pawtucket. With Monday's win Scranton/Wilkes-Barre now holds a 0.5 game lead in the International League North division.
