Toledo Mud Hens News Release
COLUMBUS, Ohio- The Toledo Mud Hens dropped the Independence Day match-up against the Columbus Clippers by a score of 5-4.
Jacob Robson collected his third homerun in six games on his way to extending his hit streak that spans as many games as he has played for Toledo. He drove in three of the Mud Hens four runs on the day.
It was Phillippe Aumont who toed the rubber to start the game for the Mud Hens. He went five innings, giving up four runs on four hits while striking out seven batters. Despite going long enough to get a win, he left the game while it was tied, so he took a no decision.
Columbus struck first, scoring three in the first inning. Aumont walked the leadoff batter, Drew Maggi, who later scored on a double from Francisco Mejia. The next batter, Brandon Barnes, sent a ball into the seats, giving the Clippers an early 3-0 lead.
The Mud Hens slowly cut into the deficit in the second inning when Robson singled home Mike Gerber. An inning later, Gerber returned the favor by tripling home Edwin Espinal. Robson resurfaced in the fourth inning with a two run bomb to give Toledo a 4-3 lead.
Just one out away from being in contention for a win, Aumont gave up a double to Yandy Diaz that scored Maggi. The game would remain tied until the late innings. Paul Voelker came out in the sixth inning and threw two perfect innings out of the Hen Pen to keep things tied.
However, during Voelker's first inning of work a foul ball hit Grayson Greiner in the low part of his facemask. The backstop left under his own power, but was removed from the game. Jarrod Saltalamacchia took over the catching duties.
The tie was broken in the eighth inning as Zac Houston took over for Voelker. He would walk Maggi, who would steal second. Two strikeouts later had things looking good for Toledo. But Barnes doubled off the wall to drive the go ahead run.
That would be the fatal blow. Ben Taylor struck out two Mud Hen hitters in the top of the ninth on his way to closing things out and collecting the win. Saltalamacchia made things interesting by driving a ball deep to right with one out, but it was just a flyout, and the Clippers took home a victory.
